LKPAC
Do you call it ER or ED? I realize the emergency department is more than a single room. I respect emergency medicine as a specialty. But ED now means "something else" in medicine. I'm old fashioned and still say ER.

JMPAC
I say both and ours is actually referred to as EC at our hospital. Emergency Center. EC is used to label all of our beds and chairs and whatnot. ER is was I say to patients because that’s what they always say.

Asclepius
Person 1: "We have an ED pt currently in the ED..." Person 2: "wait, where else would an ED pt be other than the ED?" I've actually heard this before in a hospital setting...smh lol
DizzyJ
I say ER for everything. Even when asked what my specialty is I say ER. When I probably should say EM, but I feel like saying ER just covers it all and EM is a less understood abbreviation and who has time to say "emergency medicine". skyblu
I pretty much use them interchangeably, but I always use ER with lay people. If I use ED it's most likely when speaking to other medical professionals. Along the same lines, my husband (non medical) makes fun of me because I emphasize the E over the R. So I say "EEarr" instead of "eeARR". Most EM people I know say it the same way I do, while non EM people say it like my husband does. Strange! SoCal_PA
As long as you don't say "ER room", you're ok
