Any EM locum PA's here

Recommended Posts

Hello all.

Any EM locum PA's here that can offer any advise? I am a full time ED PA w/ 4 years of UC/ED experience seeking to transition to locums. There are SO MANY locum companies. Do you have any recommendations for companies who specialize in placing Advanced Practitioners? Also how much are ED PA locum PA's paid? I know that it can vary from region but any ballpark figures? Those w/ locum experience how do you enjoy it and what made you go into locums? Have you ever had a hospital presented to you and you arrive and its not what you expected?

Lots of different types of ED locums.

There is the fill-in for major ED staffing companies (EMCARE, VEP, etc) who often have their own cool-sounding "strike teams".  In these cases, you work for the mother-company, and they pay you a little bit more to fly to wherever they need you - they pay for transportation & hotel, and cover practice expenses (malpractice, licensure, etc).

Then there is the short-term locums contract for hospitals or staffing companies.  You might move to Butte Montana for 6 months while agreeing to work there full time for XX money/benefits.  You can do this through a locums company, or you may find out that Butte General is desperate for providers and call them yourself.  If you go through a locums company, expect them to keep a LOT of the money (perhaps 50%).  But....they are the ones who gave you the lead on the job.  If you do your own legwork, you may be able to negotiate directly with the hospitals and keep a LOT more money. Depending on the company, they may cover malpractice, licensure, etc.  They may also cover housing, transpo, etc.

Lots of variability in locums.  Look around, ask questions, but DON'T SIGN A NO-COMPETE CLAUSE....EVER!!!!!
