Moving company suggestions

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I will be moving from North Carolina to Virginia next month to start a Physician Assistant program and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about a good moving company to help me move all of my items?

Thanks,

Michell

For all my moves, I used ABF moving. They have a service similar to pods where they will deliver a "relocube" to your address, you fill it up, then they will pick it up and deliver to your next address.

Here is the link:

I have used them 3 times, across the country twice, then from DC to Albany, NY. They have been 100% professional. It was a lot easier than dealing with moving truck companies.

I don't know how much stuff you have, but I think up to a one bedroom apartment (maybe two) will fit in one.

My most recent move I rented a truck and hired people to load an unload it. It was not as cheap as doing it yourself but really saved me on the hardest part- physically lifting. Most rental companies can suggest some names. I used local people on both ends and it ran me about $200 at each spot.

Thanks for your replies. I looked into a lot of moving companies and all of them have quoted me prices over $1000.00:(YIKES. I think I will rent a truck or trailer and beg my friends to help me load the truck and treat them to a nice dinner afterwards:) I do not have a lot of furniture so I do not need a big truck. One of my friends volunteered to drive the truck for me to my new location and unload the truck. I am so blessed to have wonderful friends in my life:)

I did that for a friend- she moved out of state and it was cheaper to "hire" two of us to load, drive 12 hours, spend the night, unload, and fly us back than to hire movers! I think we cost her about $600 and the truck was another $100? That said- I'm a big fan of "pizza and beer" payments!

I didn't have a lot of stuff, just boxes of books and heavy things and I sent all of my stuff through Greyhound bus. You box it up, bring it to the bus station, then pick it up at the bus station where you are moving to. I was going from Portland, OR to New Haven, CT and when I got to New Haven my stuff was there waiting for me. I had 7 heavy, rather large boxes that cost me about $125 to send. It was way cheaper than UPS or the post office. And one of the things I sent was my bicycle. Anyway, just an idea if you have some boxes of books, etc to send.

My wife and I went the route of driving our own moving truck with trailer. We went with Penske since they had much newer trucks and MPG. Plus I started by getting a quote from U-haul and having them beat it. Cost about $800 for the truck and trailer to move cross country, not including gas. That definitely beat the pants off of the moving company quotes I got. Good luck!
