TOP
Guetzow, I should have known that you were a sailor!!! And attached to Marine units! I was also at Millington Tn. before they closed it down. I have a few good stories about that place. I was in ADJ school, just out of Boot camp, in the "Eating nails and pissing razor blades" mindset of every fanatic that MCRD spits out. Some local kids, four 17-19 year old boys were in a Chevy Chevette, and the passenger front seat shot me with a ball bearing from a wrist rocket. Without thinking, I ran to the car to beat all of their asses at the same time. They must have seen that boot camp "War Face", because he started rolling up the window and screaming to the driver, "Get outta here, HE IS GOING TO KILL US!" He managed to get the window up as I got to the car, but I busted it out with my fist and was yanking the guy out of the window and pummeling him as the car was driving away! Once they got up to speed, I couldn't get him out of the car, or keep up so let him go. My friend, Derek Lasalla (Same platoon in boot camp), said, "Did you break that window with your bare hands?" and I said "HELL YEAH!" He siad, "I have never seen anything like that! You really were going to take them all on at the same time!" It was only then that I stopped to think of how bad an idea that was. I started laughing and couldn't stop for a few hours. We headed over to "Machingun Rats". That is another story.... But I have often reflected on that story because I learned a lot about mindset, motivation, and how sheer agression can win when every other factor is against you. Guest Brokepilot
I am new to this forum, but wanted to respond to this thread once I saw that there were a couple of you that had been in the same places at about the same times that I was. USMC '91-95 MCRD and Pendleton '91-'92 NAS Millington '92 MALS-16 FE '92 HMH-363 FE '92-95 Somalia (Baledogle and Mogadishu)Dec-May '92-'93 I had once dreamed of going into Medicine and PA really appealed to me, but 2 kids later and I am still dreaming. Long story, but hopefully if things work out I will be able to realize the dream one day. Currently own my own business, but thinking about going back to school and finishing my pre-reqs and applying. Take care and SEMPER FI. Guest Brokepilot
Esmerelda and MrBob, Thanks for the words of encouragement. Just turned 35 yesterday and have been thinking about going back and taking the rest of the sciences that I would need to apply for PA school. There are some good schools in the area. A bit worried about my age and experience, but we all get older and in 5 years I will be 40 no matter how I look at it. So I would rather be 40 doing something that I enjoy and feel called to do rather than 40 and still doing something that I don't enjoy in order to pay the bills. Sorry, didn't mean to highjack this thread. Thanks again. Brokepilot

TOP
Brokepilot, What company were you in when you were at MCRD in 91? I was a DI School grad in Sept and then "D" Co at that time. What MOS? I knew a SSgt Wilson who was in the Mog. He was a 6060 FE, now a 6048. He got out in 96 or 97, had had enough. Great leader!
Contrarian
Brokepilot... if you graduate PA school at 40... you still got 25 years of patient care in you IF you retire at 65...;) Go for it! DocNusum
Guest Brokepilot
MSGT Lou, I was in B Co PLT 3093 at MCRD. Oct '91-Jan '92. I was a 6060 FE with HMH-363 Red Lions while in Baledogle and Mogadishu. I had a SSgt McWilliams as the SNCOIC for some of the time, but he went back to the states about 2 months before I did. Typical Marine Corps, I was a LCPL running the shop after about 3 months in the squadron. It really teaches you to accept responsibility at an early point in your career. Sink or Swim. Do you know what squadron SSgt Williams was with. I know HMH-462 was with us for a while and HMLA-369 was also there. I remember seeing the DI School candidates out doing PT and class on Pendleton. Man, that is a tough school. I was Army National Guard prior to USMC and I have a ton of respect for the Marine DI's. I used to get a kick out of watching the DI students go out and give themselves remedial PT. Nothing like someone yelling at themselves while doing mountain climbers, etc. OK, I looked at what courses I will need to take to get all of the pre-reqs done, but have some questions. I will post them on the other areas, so that I don't highjack this again. You guys have really motivated me. Thanks.
Guest Brokepilot
Sorry Top, that was "K" Co. not "B" Co. I was thinking about Army basic I was B Co. I tried to edit the post, but was too late.
TOP
At first, I was wracking my brain on how to tactfully tell you that any "B" Co platoon would be in the 1,000 series, and only 3rd Bn would be 3093, but you cleared that up nicely. I was in the Mean and viscous Delta Co, but as a dink, I was in "B" Co. Did you have SSgt JL Vines as your DI? He was in "K" that I remember and is currently my SgtMaj. I think we followed "K" in the cycle, so my first full platoon was marching in your graduation. Interestingly enough, when I went to DI school, one of my DI's was the 2nd Bn Drill Master. And he became a SgtMaj and was on some TV reality show about Hollywood Boot Camp. Sgt Dave Fransico, and I was his first platoon.
Guest Brokepilot
If I remember right I think SSGT Vines was the SDI in one of the other platoons. I was the series scribe so I had to intereract with all of the DIs at one time or another. My DI's were Sgts. Ball, Garcia, Scimimi, and one other that escapes my memory right now. I can't remember his name, but I will never forget what he looks like. He was a big black guy from South Central LA that had competed in Judo at the PanAm Games. He got in a little trouble for striking a recruit while we were in 2nd phase. But I still think that he was one of the best DIs out there. Our graduation date was 17 Jan. It sure is a small world isn't it. I will have to dig out my Boot Camp Book and see if I can find out what series followed ours. Besides, my kids love looking at the pictures of "when Dad was a Marine". My son is 4 and he designed my birthday cake for me this year. It was Marines (little toy soldiers) taking a hill and getting the bad guys.

rebelwith
HM3, 92-97 USS Blueridge Lcc-19, Medical Department 93-94 Naval Hospital Balboa 94-95 Bethesda Naval Hospital 95, for surgical technology training 29 Palms Naval Hospital 95-96 Bremerton Naval Hospital 96-97 Been doing alot of thinking about joining back into the military and doing the PA route there. Its been frustrating for me as I feel that alot of the PA schools that I have applied to have overlooked my medical experience and training. I had 2 interviews at Medex (finally after applying several years in a row) not getting in, and having one interview at Pacific in oregon. I should hear something back from them in the next week. If this fails, I am seriously thinking of rejoining either the Navy or the Army to go to PA school. What do other prior vets think about this? Does anyone know about the current programs that are offered out there for Vets wanting to go back into the military? I wished somehow there was a way to change the past, talked some sense into that guy that I once was.. I was honorably discharged but I was young and stupid and had the reason for seperation as "failure of alcohol rehabilitation" Probabley the darkest failure that I have had to deal.. But things have changed and i am older and have a little bit of more life experiences now. Anyways, my heart is into helping people. Thanks for listening to me. TOP
The fact that you were able to get interviews in the civilian sector tells me that you have a good chance with them. Based upon my experience with the Marines (21 years), I would say that you really don't have a chance. This sounds cold, I know, but the military just doesn't have a forgiveness factor built into it. YOU WILL BE TOLD OTHERWISE, however, it is not the case. Because of my rank, I often meet people who have actually served on promotion and selection boards. THEY ARE SPECIFICALLY TOLD NOT TO HAVE A ZERO DEFECT MENTALITY, however, when they start going through the applicants, or in zone Marines, things like weight control and DUI, etc, start naturally weeding out applicants. Your peers, not policy, is what prevents your selection. To make it more simple, when you have 2,000 applicants for 20 slots, everything else being equal, the person with a spotless record gets it over the guy with one blem. And your blem seems to be one that is often looked at with more scrutiny than most others. If you are being granted interviews, it is clear to me that you are being screened and found suitable. You need to work on your interview skills, something that seems to be the most important part of the application process. Once you get that wired, you will be in. And I do share your frustration. If you can join with a guarantee of PA school, then by all means do so. But if you re-up as an HM2, with a possibility of PA school, I suspect that you will spend an additional 4 years on the Bonnie **** or Pelileu then get out one pi$$ed off sailor, probably hating yourself because you knew better. as with anything, it is your decision to make. Hope that helps HM3, 92-97USS Blueridge Lcc-19, Medical Department 93-94 I am seriously thinking of rejoining either the Navy or the Army to go to PA school. scharf1211
Consider the possible activations when returning to the military (guard/reserve). I separated from active duty and joined the ANG to complete my undergrad because I wasn't able to keep a steady schedule long enough on active duty to attend classes. I didn't want to leave the military but it was the only way for me to get the education I wanted. After joining the guard IT GOT WORSE! I was activated left and right. Because of that I was constantly droping or withdrawing from classes. It took quite a long time to complete my first 4 years of school. I actually separated completely in order to finish. Now I am in PA school and could not imagine, with my past experiance, being in the reserves or guard at the same time. There may be others who were fortunate to make it through PA school while in the reserve. I want to return, and will as soon as I am finished. After that, they can activate me and send me anywhere. I may not like where they send me but at least I will be doing the job I am happy doing. If you are doing it to get PA school paid for, don't. Just take the loans offered. There are several organizations willing to pay those loans off after you graduate. The VA, DOD, even the Army if you really want to go back. I believe they are offering 50K loan repayment plus another 30K sign on bonus. If PA is what you want I don't recommend joining the reserve just to get it paid for. The risk of not completeing the program is too high. If the military is what you want go in after you graduate. Just MHO
