roman6163
Here is the nitty gritty guys. Who wants it??? http://paworld.net/jobs/0517physicianassistantjobs.html Clinical Careers - Physician Assistant The four District Health Boards in the Northern Region of New Zealand (Auckland District Health Board (ADHB), Counties Manukau District Health Board (CMDHB), Waitemata District Health Board (WDHB) and Northland District Health Board (NDHB)), in collaboration with the University of Auckland Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, are proposing to undertake a pilot study of the Physician Assistant (PA) role. Physician Assistants are not currently part of the health workforce in New Zealand The overall purpose of the pilot will be to determine whether the PA scope of practice, as practiced by PAs trained under the USA medical model and working under the delegation of a registered medical practitioner, has a role to play in the future of health services in New Zealand (NZ). The scope of practice for PAs in New Zealand will be different and initially narrower than that in the United States, but it is expected that it will evolve during the pilot as understanding of the opportunities of the PA role in the New Zealand setting is clarified. As a first step, it is proposed to start with a small pilot in surgery at CMDHB in South Auckland. The pilot will be in the department of general surgery surgery. The proposal is to bring two USA trained PAs to NZ to work at CMDHB for a period of twelve months, commencing in 2010. The pilot may get expanded to other sites in the Northern Region. Eventide
Thanks for sharing, roman6163. I am happy to see that New Zealand is giving PAs a shot. But wow, so much pressure to be a good ambassador for the profession!
Guest surg_mule
Yes, I am a grad of Duke's 2nd Surgical residency. I have been "living the dream" ever since. Now I am on the short list in NZ. RE: so much pressure... That is what its all about. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy and the only way I have EVER got ahead has been to push past my own personal comfort levels. Stay tuned. papam
Does anyone have an update on how this pilot is doing? Contemplating moving to New Zealand in the future but I'd like to know the outlook of the PA profession there. Thanks!
mobaileypa
Any news on how this program/pilot is doing? Any possibility of opening up to more PA's being sent out to New Zealand in the near future?
andersenpa
IMO they need to send some PAs with serious experience. Make a strong impression. I wouldn't send anyone overseas to these pilot projects with less than 8-10 yrs experience.....
Nomadforlife
The first pilot program went really well here in NZ and we are working on setting up more trial sites around the country. We will be recruiting from the US and NZ if there are currently any more PAs living in NZ.

sharinarvaez
Here, here on the use of Emergency medicine PA's. I have been practicing in the ED for Wake Forest for a very long time and would love the opportunity to use my skills establishing the profession in NZ. If you hear of any movement toward that end, I'd appreciate the information! Shari
