Does it matter when I apply to non-rolling admission schools?

Recommended Posts

Really marktheshark? I love short answers like that (sarcasm). No, is simply not a good answer.

In honesty, it depends. Different schools have different methods of how they run things, and you cant just assume because they do not utilize rolling admissions that you dont have to worry about getting your app in any time soon. You do, and the best advice is to submit as soon as possible.

There are plenty of cases where a school says they do not conduct rolling admissions, but yet schedule interviews before the deadline is even up. Do some reading on this forum. Better yet, look at the individual school specific forums that you are applying for. Specifically, look at last years cycle 2015-2016 and see when students got interview offers.

Good luck,

Earlier is always better.  Even programs that don't do 'rolling admissions' will start reviewing applications as they come in.  Rolling admissions usually means they make a decision (accept/deny/waitlist) after each interview group.  Other programs will often have interview dates prior to their official deadline but they have one big decision date after all interviews are over.  That said, all of the programs I applied to like that said that after each interview date they reserved the right to offer acceptances to a few candidates who were highly desirable.

Very few programs actually wait until after the deadline to start reviewing applications - there are just too many and not enough time.  Get your application in front of adcom's eye ASAP.

No. Typically, it does not matter. And to be sure, I recommend calling the programs and tactfully asking. I called and asked two programs that question, and they reiterated that it does not matter. Both programs stated they don't start seriously screening applications until after the application deadline. As applications roll in, however, they'll screen them generally, and if the minimums aren't met in the app it gets tossed, or maybe the app gets put aside as a 'must interview' pile for later. Otherwise, there's little advantage at most programs. ... And it doesn't make much sense, in my strong opinion, for a non-rolling program - especially programs that don't want to interview more than 160 or so candidates tops due to the massive amount of time it takes - to schedule a big batch of interviews before the deadline and before it sees its entire candidate pool.

Is this a more well-rounded 'no' answer?

I don't know PAtoB, is it? If you were just starting this process, would you appreciate if someone answered your question with a short, "no?"

Obviously there is a lot more to the answer than "no," and some people may not realize that this is not a standardized process. And whether it makes sense to you or not frankly does not matter. Each school has a different process.

In the end, answering "no" to this persons question is not giving them the respect they deserve.

It really depends on the school. If you really want a helpful answer, then you should either email or call them.

My top school specifically told me that they look at all of the applications at the same time, after the deadline and that it does not matter when I submit it, as long as the application is submitted and VERIFIED before october 1st. They told me that if I was taking summer classes, that I should wait to submit my application until I received those grades.

However, another school I is was looking at said that it is really important to submit as early as I can and to update my application frequently, even though this school was not rolling admissions.

So, point is if you want a helpful answer, then you should contact the school.
