What are my chances to get into a PA program?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I have submitted my application to 4 schools. Specifically because I have yet to take the GRE and also I want to work with schools that gear toward working with underserved communities. This is a desire of mine and my background is a clear indication of that.

age: 32

cGPA=3.29

sGPA=3.32

HCE= EMT for 3 years; 4000+ hours

volunteering, community service, extra curricular activities= 10000+ over 15 years

-homeless ministry

-youth leader

-medical missions

-pre-health student org

-mentoring

Shadowing: ~100 hours

Speak: English, Korean, and Spanish

No GRE

grew up poor and had to work fulltime all throughout my academic career (hence the low GPA)

I want to know from PA students and PA's if there is a chance that I will get an interview and eventually a seat into a program. Please be honest. Thank you all for your time in advance.

Depends on the programs you applied to and who you are up against.  If the school requires the GRE then no, you won't be getting in without it.  Your HCE is average and your GPA is below average for PA applicants.  It really depends on the programs you picked if multi-lingual and extracurricular activities are enough to warrant brining you in for an interview.

Like MT2PA stated, it all depends on the schools you applied. Some schools may not even give you a look because your GPA may not be comparable to other candidates (who may have an equal or more amount of community service). However, from my research, many schools who dont require the GRE have a more holistic approach towards cadidates and may see the amount of community service that you have provided as a major plus and warranting an interview. Hopefully your PS really showed who you are and intrigues them.

4 schools is not much unfortuntately, but I wouldnt be surprised if you at least got one interview.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for your words. I have specifically chosen schools that have a holistic approach and also state they are looking for students that want to work in underserved areas. If these schools are being truthful about their values and mission statement, I think I may have a chance.

At this point, I have one class that is in progress and no GRE, so my options are limited to where I can apply. If I don't get in this cycle, I will take the GRE and have all my pre-reqs, so that will open doors to so many schools. Thanks for the optimism during the rough application time.

Honestly - I don't think you are a poor candidate... but you are below average statistically.  If I were you, I'd shoot for 10 - 15 applications.  People get accepted everyday with GPA lower than yours, but it's a matter of getting your app in front of the adcoms.  I am sure your PS highlighted your values, which should help.  Good luck!
