wherrling Posted July 7, 2016 Hello everyone! This is my first post! Woohoo! I am currently applying for a distance-learning online PA program. I am supposed to explain my motivation for this type of program. Here is the "prompt": If you wish to be considered for this option, please submit an essay describing your motivation and aptitude for this method of instruction. Give examples of your connection to your home community, your ability to work independently, difficult goals you have achieved, and other evidence of your potential for success as a distance learner. The Distance Education essay is required only for applicants requesting consideration for the distance education option. I'm AWFUL at reviewing my own work. This is my first draft. I wanted to tell my "story", but there is just so much to it! Do you think I should cut down on the details?! It's a 700 word max and I'm at 370. Thanks! Mario Andretti once said “Desire is the key to motivation, but it's determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal - a commitment to excellence - that will enable you to attain the success you seek”. Since a young age, I have had the dream of becoming a physician assistant. This dream has taken a great deal of determination and commitment to bring to reality. In college, I completed my degree and obtained health care experience in both traditional and non-traditional methods. As I worked full-time in the summer semester, I also successfully completed online distance-learning courses in various disciplines from all over the world. My focus and determination allowed for me to successfully complete the course work on schedule and excel on the exams. In addition, when I volunteered and completed my internship in Thailand, I was able to also successfully complete online biomedical science courses through my university despite the great distance and time difference. Most recently, I have relocated to Marshall, Minnesota as a result of my fiancé’s pending military deployment through the US Army. My fiancé is a Minnesota native and moved to Wisconsin to my hometown of Middleton after we began dating. Once he received his notice of pending deployment, we were required to move back to Minnesota so he is near the military base. He also has a young daughter Aspyn, so this additionally motivated our move so I can continue to build a relationship and maintain co-parenting as he is overseas. As a result of his military obligation, I relocated my job to Marshall, Minnesota and I have been able to successfully work independently from home. Since my relocation, I have been able to communicate with my customers and exceed sales goals. This relocation exemplifies my ability to maintain intrinsic motivation while working independently. With my vast experience with distance learning, I believe that I would be a wonderful fit for the University of Wisconsin-Madison Distance Education Program. I have shown my ability to successfully work independently both academically and professionally. In addition to my great deal of health care experience, I believe my determination and commitment to my unrelenting goal would aid to my success in this distance learning program.
murphycol31 Posted July 9, 2016 My advice: don't start the prompt with "since I was young I've always dreamed of being a PA". They've read that a million times. It's not creative or original. Open it with an interesting story about what exactly as a kid inspired you. For example, seeing a family member suffer and watching a PA care for them etc. The second part about the military and relocating is a great idea to sell the distance learning. Be less general and more specific overall. Every sentence should have a purpose. Goodluck Sent from my SM-G900T using Tapatalk
marktheshark89 Posted July 9, 2016 Yup wisconsin madison offers one, and has for several years now. Yale is planning another.
corpsman89 Posted July 9, 2016 Interesting. I thought Yale was going to be the countries first. Learn something every day I guess.
jlumsden Posted July 10, 2016 I would challenge you to read four to five other PA application essays (posted on this site), and figure out the ways in which your essay resembles theirs. If you find phrasing that is very similar (e.g. "my focus and determination" or "I have had the dream of becoming a physician assistant"), cut it, or reword it. Also, you are a bit adjective heavy. Go through your essay, and cut one unnecessary adjective for every three sentences.
mtnpa Posted July 10, 2016 Interesting. I thought Yale was going to be the countries first. Learn something every day I guess. Wisconsin is like a pseudo online. It's distance track still requires to go to campus a couple of times per semester and you are there for the 10 weeks of the first summer term. Also only neighboring states are eligible. As what I read on their website. The difference with yale is that it would've been the first one that is completely online.
marktheshark89 Posted July 10, 2016 Yale will require several campus visits as well. I think the biggest difference is that wisconsin accepts like 10 students per year while yale is looking to accept up to 350 students.
