New perspective on not enough physicians

It's the same line of reasoning that's been raised before- if you don't increase the number of residency spots, the number of medical school slots doesn't matter.  At least Texas is trying to catch up with the problem- one of the lawmakers in the article, John Zerwas who is a practicing anesthesiologist, gets it and wants to keep funding GME programs.

Not to make this too Texas-specific, but there are also three Texas PA programs in the pipeline- one is opening up this fall, with two more to follow

1.  Overall doctor shortage is a myth, there is a lack of doctors willing to work in rural areas, but that will ALWAYS be true, no matter if you produce 10,000 MDs a year or 10,000,000 MDs a year.  Doctors and PAs and NPs (on average) will ALWAYS prefer urban areas over rural.  ALWAYS.

2.  University of Houston building a med school is a joke.  It's a 3rd rate institution that has no business building a program.  Besides Houston area already has 3 medical schools and doesn't need another one.  I laugh at the dean at Univ Houston who says that Houston needs a new med school.

3.  Texas doesn't need any new med schools or residencies period.  The number of doctors in Texas has skyrocketed due to malpractice reform.  Texas has the best pro-doctor malpractice laws in the country and as a result Texas is now the #1 state in the country in terms of attracting new doctors to the area.  The Texas Medical Board has a 6 month wait on granting new licenses because they are so overwhelmed.

Amazing how malpractice reform can alleviate the doctor shortage. Who would have thought that punishing doctors would cause then to go elsewhere or vice-versa?
