place123
What fields are of these positions found in? I am guessing mostly in the emergency room? Are there any other fields that have schedules like this? Whats your work/life balance like?
Moderator EMEDPA Posted December 17, 2015 Moderator Share Posted December 17, 2015 my first job was m-t 9-7 urgent care. 3 day weekend every week with the option of working fridays at time and a 1/2 , which I did every other week. nice work/life balance having a 3 day weekend every week. I've also done the 3 in a row thing and that wasn't bad either. I am currently scheduled all over the map, but can take off any days I want either via schedule or trades. I have heard that emergency care(in a hospital that is open 24/7) is one of the higher paying fields while primary care is one of the lower paying but has a lot of autonomy. I always imagined urgent care as being somewhat in between the two disciplines. Urgent care clinics where I live are clinics that you just walk right in and ask to be seen that same day ASAP. They treat less serious things as an emergency room. How does urgent care compare? so many newb questions...
Moderator EMEDPA Posted December 17, 2015 Moderator Share Posted December 17, 2015 depends on the urgent care. there is the full spectrum from minute clinics checking 10 things to places that basically operate as 24 hr free standing ERs.
Planteater
I'm in bone marrow transplant- our outpatient team (day hospital) works 4 10's and our inpatient team works 3 12's, with a 4th 12 monthly and 12 hours of admin time monthly. We all rotate weekend coverage (in flux but will probably be about monthly-q 6 weeks). OP=outpatient

melhhn330
I work 14 12 hour shifts per month, sometimes 3 12hr shifts in a row. This is in Urgent Care, I love my work/life balance - allows a lot of vacation. I also have 7 days each month I am "unavailable" without using any PTO. charlottew
Critical care, 13 12hr shifts every 4 weeks, there's some flexibility in scheduling your shifts. About half are nights, and every 3rd weekend. Work-life balance is OK. Days off are sometimes spent recovering from work, rather than enjoying life.
