CaliPAHopeful
I have spent all day looking at schools, volunteer opportunities, shadowing opportunities, and pre reqs. I am a 2nd year Nutrition major in a rural area. There just aren't many opportunities here. I spend my Summers in the SF Bay Area, but most opportunities in the Bay want at least a 6 month commitment. I really wanted to complete an EMT-B over the Summer, but every single program in California requires at least 2 semesters or quarters. I can't do it while I'm in school. I'm slightly worried it's going ti take me forever to get my EMT-B and even longer to find work. I spent a lot of time sprucing up my LinkedIn to try and network, but nothing so far. We have a pre health advising center at my school, but they don't really take me seriously because I'm not a bio or chem major. What other options are out there? Where else can I look for HCE or volunteer/shadow experience?
Diggy
Private owned outpatient clinics, underserved health centers (away from the city/metro area), small clinics (hospital affiliated or not), nursing homes, hospitals. Pre-Health won't take you serious? How so?
CaliPAHopeful
That's helpful, thank you! Our Nutrition program has several concentrations, and one of them is specifically pre med. I'm not in that concentration, I'm in the pre dietitian concentration. It covers all the pre reqs for PA programs, so I don't feel the need to switch. But because of that, they don't take me seriously when I go in to talk to them.
whoRyou
Have you thought about LTC (Nursing homes)? It does take someone special to do this type of 'work' I must admit. I am almost finished with with my training as a CNA at a LTC and I must admit I will NEVER be the same, it has made me more humble than I ever thought possible. surfca40
Expand your area for EMT programs. My EMT program in California was 5 weeks full time, Monday-Thursday. There are others out there like it, but that'll probably be the quickest you can get it done.
Rosslyn
Here is a five week course: http://www.fastresponse.org/classes/career_courses/emt/ I'm sure there are others. Keep looking.
CaliPAHopeful
I have read that people who go through programs not through an actual school, like a community college, don't have good rates of finding jobs in the Bay Area.

I'm sure you'd be able to find a job, as long as you pass your NREMT, the certification is the same. I don't think somewhere would not hire you because you went to a private program instead of a community college.
MyNameWasUsed
I did an EMT program in long beach california. 28 days 4 weeks. CIEMT. Ironically, I received all my HCE/PCE by not being an EMT because my college city doesn't hire basics lol so this just show that you dont a certification or license to get HCE/PCE
