prerequisite question

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anybody might be able to shed some light on my situation. I am applying this cycle and recently received an e-mail from Samuel Merritt that my file is considered incomplete because I have not met or shown that I plan to meet the prerequisite of "general biology." I'm sure most applicants have in fact taken this course, but I never did. I do have a bachelors and a masters, but general bio was never required, and it also wasn't required for any of my prereq classes.

I can't for the life of me find on their website anything about general biology being a requirement, so I'm totally confused. I e-mailed back and then called Pam Harrison. She was super nice but explained that because of the back-up of applications she would not be able to respond to me for a while. Its been a few days now and of course I'm starting to panic!

I received an email from them asking about my stats course. I emailed back where it was on my transcript (I took it in the social sciences and it is listed as something weird) and attached the course syllabus. I got an email back within a day or two saying thanks and that my app was being forwarded on to the committee. If you have the hours they require in the biological sciences I can't see where it would be an issue...

YaelS,

I think you should be ok, although its strange to me that you were able to take advance bio classes without having basic bio...how did you manage that? I'm just curious. I took "basic bio" under zoology for one semester and i had to explain this to one school (NOT SMU). I'm a current student and never had a problem. as long as you have whats listed on the website you should be fine. I also took Stats under the Psychology program and that counts as well.

I also took stats in the psychology department. It was 10 years ago, but they said it was fine. I am taking anatomy/physiology at Foothill College, and all they required was successful completion of high school chemistry and biology which I had. Same with microbiology. I didn't realize this wasn't the norm!

How are you enjoying the program so far?

Yes!!! I LOVE it and I'm glad I choose this program even though I had to go through the waitlist torture. Its challenging but you learn a lot and everyone works together to help each other out. The fact that SMU has a cadaver lab should not be taken lightly...now that we are in anatomy I cannot imagine being in another program learning about the human body without cadavers. its extremely helpful and mind-blowing at times when you actually SEE cancer in a body or other diseases and their real effects. They also have study abroad options and volunteering abroad... I could go on but I won't :) So choose your school wisely and pick what fits you and your goals best! You will learn what fits you at the interview. Good luck!
