balsam88
Hi all! I'm a Canadian MT (Medical technologist/Medical laboratory technologist) grad with 2 years work experience at a hospital + one year hospital internship interested in applying for a PA program in Michigan. Would my work experience as an MT be acceptable for the 2 years experience required for applying to PA schools? Also, does anyone know what the job prospects for PA's are like in Canada? Thanks
calad
From what I've seen medical technologist is usually an accepted form of health care experience. Only surefire way to know is to email the programs, but the general rule is if you're working with patients in any way its probably a thumbs up. Not to mention 2 years full time is a substantial amount of experience, so I would guess you are in good shape so long as your GPA is decent enough. cinntsp
It counts for HCE but not being direct patient care experience is a disadvantage.
JasonD
Most schools accept it. Best to ask the particular program you are interested in.
balsam88
Thanks guys! Even though as an MT most of the work is done in the lab, I did have some direct patient contact however when performing phlebotomy. Thanks for the insight and I will def. ask the schools about that :)
c0untingstars
Your experience sounds good - I think Arcadia likes Med Techs. Also, consider applying to some schools outside of MI, they are very competitive! Good luck!
