non-biology majors, which upper level biology classes are u gonna take?

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty sure most PA schools require at least 6 upper level biology credits, labs may or may not be included depending on the institution.

I'm an exercise science major, so a lot of my major classes are based on anatomy, human movement and performance and injury. However I'm a bio minor.

I've taken Cell Bio, which I got a B in. Currently in Genetics, praying I can pull off an A.

Next semester I'm registered for Microbiology, the prof is said to be really difficult so I'm kind of nervous about that.

I'm thinking about Biochem and Immunology, not sure if I want to take those yet.

Currently going though this myself. Went back and did a post-bacc, intending on going to med school.

Did a full year in

Gen Bio

Gen Chem

Gen Physics

Organic

Then through about PA school, currently in

A&P 1

Micro

Med term

Nutrition

All the schools I have talked to tell me, you are on the right track, but we need to see upper level coursework. So, I thought I was done, guess not. I plan to finish up A&P 2 next semester and take Biochem online. Over the summer I plan to take human disease. Finally in the fall finish off with genetics and physiology. So, hopefully that will do, but who knows anymore.

At most schools, you can only take Biochem after orgo 1 & 2 and I was really trying to avoid orgo 2 because it's not required for the schools I looked at, they only require one semester of orgo.

But I figure PA school is gonna be way harder than o chem 2 lol.

I graduate in May so I'll definitely be doing a post-bacc, unfortunately. I want to retake chem 2 and anatomy for higher grades, and take organic and maybe another upper level bio class. But before I do that I want to get my EMT and get employment.

Not a bio major, but the last upper level course I took was Microbiology. I really wanted to take neuro and immuno but there is no room for it in my last semester.

Upper levels that looks interesting are;

  • Biochem
  • Virology/Bacteriology
  • Neurobiology
  • Endocrinology
  • Immunology
  • Cancer Biology

I was a micro major and my suggestion is to A: take classes that will interest you (you'll do better!) but also B: take ones that are relevant.  Highly recommend  medical micro, virology, immunology - they are the type of things you'll definitely learn in some capacity in PA school.

Biochem is required for a lot of programs and will also be helpful (some schools let you take biochem in lieu of orgo 2).

Honestly, anything is better than nothing.  Just don't stress yourself out over it.

Psych major, took several upper level courses in:

Cardiovascular physiology

Human Pathophysiology

Advanced Anatomy Lab

Immunology

Human Pharmacology

Intro to Human Disease

Physiology of Aging

and a few others

Haha, looks like you took all those through the health and human physiology department? I took a bunch of those too...great classes but some (cardio phys) were insanely hard....Is Stauss still teaching?

Yup, sure did lol. Stauss is still teaching as of May 2014 when I graduated, he was one of my favorite professors.
