DEA Proposes Increase in Registration Fees

Terms:Prescribing

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) published a notice of proposed rulemaking on July 6 to increase the fee schedule for DEA registration. By law, DEA registration and re-registration fees must support the full operating costs of the agency's Diversion Control Program (DCP), a program that continues to grow in response to escalating prescription drug abuse. (From FY 2007 - FY 2010, DEA estimates that total obligations for the DCP increased by 49 percent. For FY 2012- 2014, DEA must collect $1,072,357,746 in registration fees to fund the DCP.) DEA registration categories of practitioners, mid-level practitioners, dispensers, researchers, and narcotic treatment programs currently pay an annual registration fee of $184 or a combined registration fee of $551 every three years to support the operating costs of the DCP. Under the DEA's proposed new methodology, these registrants, including PAs, would pay $732 for the three-year fee, an increase of $60 per year. In analyzing the impact of the proposed fee increase, DEA compared the 33 percent increase in fees to the increase in average incomes for physicians, dentists, and PAs. According to the DEA, the 33 percent fee increase as a percentage of average income is 6 percent for physicians, 11 percent for dentists, and 9 percent for PAs. DEA will accept comments on the proposed rule on or before September 6, 2011. This, plus, in south Carolina, 125 per year for state DHEC authorization to prescribe. And in north Carolina, 100 per year "practitioner privilege " fee

Nickel and dimed. This year:

571 DEA, 125 DHEC, 300 MUSC controlled substance course ( required for initial DHEC approval), 125 SC license, 100 NC license, 350 PANRE exam, 80 nccpa biannual fee.

About 1700 this year. Next year same minus DEA and panre . Geez
