Spot23light Posted July 6, 2011 I can't seem to find any formal rankings of PA EM residency programs but I am hoping people have heard good things about some and bad about others and have some sort of informal ranking.
Moderator EMEDPA Posted July 6, 2011 Moderator they are all good but some have different areas of focus. some(iowa, upstate ny) try to prepare you for rural/solo coverage. others focus more on community and trauma ctr type setting with double physician coverage.
Friction Posted August 27, 2011 EMEDPA, would you say that USC has a pretty good opportunity for residencies in ED/OR?
So Cal PA Posted August 27, 2011 I wasn't aware that LAC+USC had an ER Residency anymore. Is that the program you are speaking of? Do they?
Friction Posted August 28, 2011 Yeah, I saw something about them having one at Arrowhead but I can't seem to find it now. They have OB and Surgery but not sure about the EM.
Moderator EMEDPA Posted August 29, 2011 Moderator LA county/usc had their last em pa residency class graduate in 1995. it's a real shame. great residency. I have worked with several of their grads. likely the best em pa residency to exist to date.
imraanqazi Posted December 3, 2011 I am also interested in ER program so guys what do you think about Johnhopkins and also NY upstate rural program is good or bad in what sense
flyingsquirrel Posted December 4, 2011 The Bassett Hospital system is going through some MAJOR growing pains and seems to be stretched thin in all directions. I have no direct knowedge of how this is affecting the PA residency program, but I'm staying away from it.
imraanqazi Posted December 5, 2011 Thank you for information. I am not graduated yet just want to know that what is the difference between residency and fellowship and how it make a difference to go through all this fellowship and residency program and directly joining the ER for job.
Moderator EMEDPA Posted December 5, 2011 Moderator doing a residency or fellowship(the terms are often interchangeable for pa's) gives you thousands of hours of precepted training in your specialty, off service rotations doing things you would only do rarely in regular practice, and the opportunity to master skills not frequently utilized by new grad pa's like ultrasound, chest tubes, central lines, etc. I would encourage anyone graduating today who wants to do em to do a residency. I still think about it because I know there are holes in my training that a residency would fill.
imraanqazi Posted December 5, 2011 Thank you for excellent advice so what fellowship program you recommend I am thinking of EVSM
Moderator EMEDPA Posted December 6, 2011 Moderator 12 or 18 months depending on the program. these are paid positions with a full benefits package. granted the pay is resident pay.(45-60k/yr)
treyviso Posted May 27, 2012 i'm in the process of applying for ER residency program in arrowhead, colton CA. i am trying to get some feedback on as to if this program is actually worth getting (taking the consideration of how effective is the training and how marketable can you be after you finish the program). thank you
treyviso Posted June 13, 2012 i have an interview for the EMPA fellowship program tomorrow and i was wondering if you had any tips or wondering if you knew what kind of questions i should expect. your response would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Moderator EMEDPA Posted June 13, 2012 Moderator be ready to explain your interest in emergency medicine and the type of setting you want to work in when done. if it is a group interview let other applicants talk and don't dominate the conversation. they are looking for people they can get along with as well as folks who fit the mission of the program. good luck. you made a great decision to do a residency.
