For those w/ low GPA and worried about getting into PA school, I just have to say do whatever you can to make yourself stronger via experience and hope to get invited somewhere and nail that interview (with a little help from the big guy up there). As for myself, I think my LOR's and my interview saved my butt. A challenging undergrad ed may have also helped me as well. Just think positive. It's possible.

Undergrad Ed School: Grand Valley State University

Cumulative Undergrad. GPA: 3.35 (I took a hit in the GPA freshman year. I got pissed and spent the last 3 years working on it. Not fun but it taught me a lot about how to deal with failure.)

Science Undergrad. GPA: Don’t know exacts, but higher than Cumulative

Age at application time: 21

1st GRE: 1100 cumulative but I don’t remember the break down. If you take it STUDY, I did not take it serious enough.

Direct Patient Care: (type & hours) 7 seasons (1000 hrs. is what I listed for CASPA) of volunteer ski patrol. Lots of trauma, but few medical calls. It never failed to amaze me what people will due to themselves when they combined alcohol, some slippery boards strapped to their feet, and a hill cover in Michigan powder (aka ice that you can see through).

Extracurricular/Research Activities:

100 hrs. of volunteering at an ER, Huge help in making the decision to become a PA. I was not able to see a lot, but little direct patient care.

20 hrs. Shadowing a few different Physician Assistants

1 year: Tutor for Clinical Nutrition and Bio Chem. (I hated inorganic and organic, loved bio chem. go figure)

1 year: Laboratory assistant for GVSU Microbiology lab.

1 year: Pre-PA club treasure/ member, it was a great way to meet people interested in the same field and going through the same things.

Schools Applied: GVSU, Central Michigan University, University of New England

Application Submitted Date: Aug. for CASPA and Sept. for GVSU (2005)

Interview Invites: GVSU, CMU

Denied: University of New England

Accepted: CMU and GVSU-attending GVSU class of 2009

GVSU is the odd ball not using CASPA, but there app. is easy and cheep. The interveiw and pre-req's are pretty intense. If you have any Q’s feel free to ask, good luck to all.

To those prospective applicants, I strongly believe it was my LORs from docs that I work with and the interview that gave me the opportunity to start PA school this fall…especially given there were so many great candidates that I got to meet at interviews…I have been blessed.

Undergrad Ed School: UC San Diego, B.S. Microbiology; Minor: Chemistry and Art

Post-Bacc GPA: 4.0 (after 8 year break from last college work…)

Age at application time: 29

1st GRE: don’t remember

2nd GRE: 620V, 690Q, 5.0AW (just decided to take it one week…suggest studying in some fashion as it is a standardized test afterall)

Direct Patient Care:

A variety but here are some highlights: volunteer work at a VA Hospital, phlebotomist, medical assistant, ASCP certified technologist, and some work as an EMT. Plus did in-home care for several relatives that suffered from cancer and brain trauma

Extracurricular/Research Activities:

Microbiology Lab Supervisor for U.S. military medicine

A clinical trials coordinator

A HazMat trainer

Contributions to over 10 peer-reviewed journal articles (1 first-author, another one in development)

Mentoring and tutoring of HS and Comm. College students

Community service outreaches with my church

Application Submitted Date: July 2005

Interview Invites: 6

Denied: 2 from interview invites

I'm going to jump on the low-balling GPA group wagon... It's funny that it took going to PA school to get better grades. Who would have thought? My situation was very different, but I posted to show that it is possible to get in without having great numbers. I wouldn't suggest going this route though.
