3 months as a phlebotomist

20 years as a naval aviator

As you can see not a great deal of health care experience, but I was fortunate enough to find a school that looked at the bigger picture with respect to life experience.

My tips:

I didn't have extensive medical experience, but I had a lot of things going on. I did all these activities and had two part time jobs at the same time. So, I think it helped that they knew I could handle a lot and still maintain my GPA. I was really nervous my first interview, but after that I was able to loosen up a lot more. The only way I prepped for the interviews was finding out everything I could about the program, and making sure I had some solid questions to ask my interviewers. (Every one of my interviews they asked me if I had any questions for them) I thought it would be better not to sound too rehearsed, so I didn't do mock interviews or pre-script any answers to standard questions. But, that is just my preference. The admissions process was long and can be stressful, but try to enjoy it. I made it a point to take some extra days in each city, to check it out and see if it is somewhere I could see myself fitting in. Congrats to all who got in, and good luck to those who are hoping too!

My advice: Set your sights far (if you can, financially) and PRACTICE your interviewing skills; talk to whoever and to as many ppl as you can about your aspirations as this will ease your nerves. And as you can see, my grades and gre are not very pretty and I was still accepted so don't let those factors get you down. This was my second time around and I was accepted to a university over 3,000 miles away from my hometown- God has something very special in store for everyone and it is up to you to make sure it happens :)

I think this format is more readable than the one currently being used... feel free to copy/paste it. (what can i say, I was feeling industrious)

.Grades/Degree/GRE

.................................Age: 27

Undergrad School/Degree: BA in English (minors in communications and photography) from University Of the Incarnate Word

..............Undergrad cGPA: 3.48 (3.98 last 120+ hours)

....Science Undergrad GPA: 3.4 (4.0 last 120+ hours)

...................Post Bac GPA: 4.0

............................GRE(s): 1440 (730 Verbal, 710 Quant, 4.0 AW)

..Graduate School/Degree: N/A

.............

..................Graduate GPA: N/A

........................

Note on GPA: I had 21 hours of F for my first 3 semesters because I was too immature and lazy to even withdraw when I decided to not show up to class anymore. However, I covered this in my personal statement and my subsequent performance more than made up for it. Every adcom at all 5 school I interviewed said it was basically a non-issue since I had done so well since then. Some even complimented me on the recovery (saying that it was pretty amazing) so it may have helped, rather than hurt me. So for any of you that are freaking out about that 1 or 2 bad grades you got when you were a freshman/sophmore.... chill out....... I got accepted to Duke with 21 hours of F and a bunch of Ws.

EXPERIENCE
