just_me
FINALLY I GET TO POST IN THIS THREAD:smile: Undergrad Ed School: St Petersburg College (but doing degree completion with Thomas Edisaon State College due to changes at SPC) Cumulative Undergrad. GPA: 3.60 Science Undergrad. GPA: BCP 3.31 Other Science 3.75 Age at application time : :;;D: GRE: 1000 Direct Patient Care : At the time of applying: 300 hours clinical research assistant, 2205 phlebbotomist, 4472 other HCE--by the time I interviewed I had an additional 500 hours as a medical assistant Extracurricular/Research Activities: None really Schools Applied: Texas Tech, Loma Linda, Samuel Merritt, Touro NV (meant to apply to CA program), Cornell, UAB, UNE, Emory, Barry St Pete, Nova Orlando, AT Still, UW Madison DL Program, and UF Application Submitted Date: August 31, 2010 Schools Received Application Date: September 9, 2010 for the first wave of applications...I didnt apply to all the schools at once Interview Invites: Barry, UW Madison, UAB, Emory, UNE. Denied: Texas Tech, Loma Linda (my graduation date changed from Fall to Spring so I no longer qualified), Touro (did not meet the pre-reqs since I applied to the wrong one), Cornell (since I did not include my GRE on my CASPA), UF said my GRE was not competitive enough, AT Still (told I applied too late), Withdrew Application: UW Madison, Nova Orlando, Samuel Merritt Waitlisted: UAB Accepted: UNE (I declined the seat), Emory (accepted my seat) ***NOTE*** While it may be nice to skip the interview I would be leary of attending a program that didnt at least do a phone interview or something. I had my #1 choice set in my mind for 3 yrs. I interviewed there and the program was great BUT when I had the chance to visit my 2nd choice and then interviewed and met the staff, they quickly became my number 1# choice. While interviews cost money, they are also your chance to interview THEM. YOure paying god knows how much money to these programs and its best that you get as good a feel for them as possible because that place will be your home for the next 2 years if your life. I dunno about you but I NEVER want to go through this again:;;D: Pre-pas protect your GPA and work on your HCE a smuch as possible...the competition is definitely heating up out there. And those of you applying for the 2nd+ time I meet a few people like that and you know what...quite a few of them have seats this time around. Lastly do your homework. Research the school AND the surrounding areas. Nothing worse than paying all this money to travel to a small town and interview only to realize "hey this school is in a small town...I dont want to be in a small town"--oh wait there is something worse.....having that be your only acceptance. Only apply to schools where you can see yourself living for 2 years, only apply to schools that you can meet the requirements for EVEN if things go wrong in your life and try to visit as many schools as you can BEFORE you apply. I was also a patient and that is the reason for my interest in pursuing this career. Did you get any negative feedback for using that experience for patient care hours? Thanks for your feedback! For all those out there with low GPAs, there is hope, but don't fool yourself into thinking it's an easy path, because it is not. I knew my GPA sucked through college, but the experience I was gaining while working while I was in school is what separated me from the rest. Your GPA (unfortunately) is the most important number on your app, but your HCE hours come in a close second. If being a PA is what you want to become, you will get there, just don't give up. Everyone has their tough times, but it's those that push through that separate themselves from the rest. This site is an unbelievable resource for you throughout this process. I became a member of this forum 2-3 years before I even applied. If anyone ever has any questions, feel free to PM me at any time. Good luck everyone! Interview Invites: SMU, Western, LLU Denied: UC Davis Withdrew Application: None Waitlisted: Loma Linda Accepted: Samuel Merritt!!! (accepted offer) and Western (declined) My best advice is to do your best in prepping for interviews by knowing the details of the profession in addition to the big stuff. My first interview (LLU) was not great since holes in my knowledge were apparent, but I learned a lot from my fellow interviewees and took the time before my 2nd interview to catch up on what I wish I had known for the first. (Reading the PA Practice Act, understanding the laws re: PAs in California, learning the details of what constitutes "supervision" by the supervising MD, learning what drugs we can/cannot prescribe, finding out what it takes to recertify, etc etc.) Of course know why you want to be a PA and why the schools should accept you, but I think applicants can really set themselves apart by showing that they really know what it takes and have done all the research. It pays to do your homework :) GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!
