I boosted this from the SDN dental forum, figured this place needs it. it could really cut down on the "what are my chances" type new threads. also, all you past applicants and now practicing PA's, please post your stats also if you choose. i'd post mine but they won't be final till spring '06.

It's been a few years since I posted this... I went to PA school, served as student member on the ad comm, graduated and am now in my second year of practice. I get quite a few people asking me questions about getting in with a low GPA, so here are a few thoughts about what helped me:

  • The most important thing I did was talk to an admissions counselor at every program I was interested in attending. I concentrated my efforts on the programs that seemed enthusiastic about me despite my low GPA. You could ask which programs these were, but it wouldn't matter. After being on an adcomm and participating in this forum, I can tell you that admissions criteria can be in flux... so get on the phone and find out who is interested in YOU!
  • My overall GPA was low, but I had a high science GPA and an upwards trend. I was a lousy student ages 18-20, when I changed majors every 1-2 semesters... I was a great student after several years off, then going back and obtaining a science degree.
  • I did post-bacc work and got all As while working ful-time and being married - demonstrating an ability to manage a challenging schedule with success.
  • I had strong, HANDS-ON patient care experience for many years.
  • I had strong LORs.
  • I participated in a variety of activities, showing I was a well-rounded person.

If your GPA is low, you have a harder, longer path to PA school. There probably isn't a shortcut. But, in my experience, it can be done.

Feel free to PM me with more specific questions.

V_chicky,

i noticed your undergrad school UC-San Diego. i'm just curious, could you tell me how competitive it was to get into that school out of high school. someone told me you had to have a 4.0 and superior SAT's. is this true? i ask because some of the affluent and not so intelligent students from my old high school ended up there.

i didn't see anyone buying their way into ucsd, if that is what you're asking. i can only speak from my own experience though. i know that it is now extremely hard to get into any of the UC schools, the rumors i've heard say that the incoming GPA is over 4.0. but, then i've also heard that they no longer consider GPA, that they now look at your own personal experiences and what hardships you've been through. sorry, can't be too helpful.

Undergrad Ed School: AA in Health Studies from Del Mar College, Corpus Christi, TX. BS in Health Sciences cum laude from Texas A & M Corpus Christi, TX

Cumulative Undergrad. GPA: 3.32, last 30 hours: 3.72

Science Undergrad. GPA: much lower, I was not a stellar student when I went to college the first time and had to carry a lot of bad grades with me.

Cumulative Graduate GPA: (if applicable)

Science Graduate GPA: (if applicable)

Age at application time : 36

1st GRE: 450 Verbal 550 Quantitative 4.5 A.W (It was very depressing to spend over $100.00, take an exam, and find out that I am incredibly average!)

2nd GRE: (if applicable)

Direct Patient Care : I shadowed 2 PA's for about 60 hours. My direct patient care experience comes from me being the patient as I was a pedestrian who was hit by a car. I learned so much about health care professions after spending 3 weeks in a coma, 2 years of physical and occupational therapy, and 5 years of exhausting surgeries (about 15 orthopedic and reconstructive). Besides the fact that I have always loved medicine, who else could understand what it is like to be a patient unless it was someone who has been in that situation before?

Extracurricular/Research Activities: I am a single mother with two children. My daughter, 8 years old, lives with me while my 12 year old son lives with his father in El Paso, TX and balancing work, school, and fun time with the kids is a full time job and a great challenge. I wouldn't have it any other way, I am looking forward to throwing myself into my studies again soon. I also love to play tennis and get out on the courts whenever possible.

It's CASPA time so I thought I'd bump this thread up!

yeah. i want to know how much higher the bar has rose this yr. seems every yr the applicant pool is larger and more competitive. some doctor told me to just go for medical school since its probably easier to get into, number wise, and also because many more people are interested in mid-level careers such as PA/NP/AA/CRNA and many more are appearing such as Radiologist Assistant, and others. but i still have my mind set on this, so when anybody hears the good new, please let us know.... :)
