Boatswain2PA
Anyone going to Essentials of Emergency Medicine 2015 in October? I went to SEMPA two years ago and it was great (except for the extra EKG lecture which turned into a lecture on caring for the heart transplant patient..yeah "no thanks") so I think I'm going to EEM this year. Anyone else going? Anyone else been to both and can compare/contrast them?
Moderator True Anomaly Posted June 6, 2015 Moderator Share Posted June 6, 2015 Haven't been to EEM, but you know I've been to SEMPA since we shared drinks in Vegas.....I'd imagine that EEM is quite awesome since it's run by Mel Herbert and his merry band of misfits, but that's total speculation. gbrothers98
I went to essentials back in 09. Mel H runs a good course and I would suspect it has gotten better over time since then. I look at the set up they have now and the course is set up to work within the limits of cognitive load theory. That means to the point lectures, brief length, finite concrete points made. Prolly wont get a decub ulcer at this conference and may actually want to go rather sit by the pool. That theater at the Cosmo looks like an interesting venue vs the usual Vegas conference hall. I have already done my vegas conference for the year. The streaming option looks great if you dont want to travel and something to entertain in the future. Other thing I liked was that EEM put a 2 hr block in the middle of the day, a much more realistic lunch in Vegas timeframe. I was at SEMPA Vegas also. That was a good conference. Not to take away from it but Mel H seems to have made his life's work moving Hippo Education forward and can tell with his approach, the resources he applies and the polish he brings to the venue. Plus looking at expected #s and conference fees, can do a lot with almost 2 million dollars. If you have the $ and the time, attend. I dont think you will be disappointed. If you do go to Vegas, take a walk down to the Linq, the big ferris wheel in the middle of vegas and the venues down that cobblestoned street just off the strip. It is a break from the usual casino oriented entertainment on the strip. Also, staying at the Cosmo is on the high end. I think you can get decent value for your money and stay at Ballys. Room rate will be less, pool is not crowded and can use the fitness facilities free. I also like the Todd English Pub. It is in the shops at crystals between the Cosmo and the Mandarin. Sitting outside on the couches at the Rhumbar at the Mirage is nice too. I have a whole other list of things to recommend in Vegas if anyone wants them. Have a good time. Boatswain2PA
Thanks G. I have an old shipmate who I will likely stay with so we can catch up. I've done the "Vega strip" thing before and, while it's always interesting walking around and seeing the sights, it's a BIT overpriced isn't it! True - We gotta do that again. I'm thinking might go to SEMPA San Diego next year.
