tlahut
EPT is a new law in NY State and NY City. EPT is Expedited Partner Therapy for Chlamydia, intended to facilitate treatment of sex partners to persons infected with chlamydia. Basically, you can give the person that is presenting with chlamydia a prescription for their partner without their partner's information (no name, no address, or no date of birth). Legal coverage is important. Providers who prescribe in good faith for EPT are not subject to civil or criminal liability, and EPT is not deemed unprofessional conduct. Just write "EPT" on the name line of the prescription. Good for pink smoothies of Zithromax 250mg (#4) all at once, and only pertains to chlamydia. SocialMedicine
Mixed feelings about this ... Who is reviewing allergy and medication interactions? The busy pharmacist at CVS with a line of twenty customers? Who is counseling patients when they can be sexually active again following treatment? Is anyone doing safe sex teaching or HIV screening? Chlamydia and Gonorrhea infections often come together ..... Perhaps the patient contracted only Chlamydia or his test is false negative for gonorrhea and now the partner goes untreated for his gonorrhea infection. Also, you cannot treat NG with oral tabs as the preferred therapy is 250MG ceftriaxone injection. Its not a bad idea .... the net gain from this plan is positive ..... but it does raise some issues. I do not think I would feel comfortable prescribing this way. I have not heard anyone doing it either and am in NYC and practice STI medicine. tlahut
k, Considering epidemiology and co-infections, it may not be a great strategy. Considering the ‘emesis aspect’ of 1000mg zithromax, I am skeptical. Helpful for select patients? Yes. Doubtful strategy for the ‘frequent flier’ population, which is a very specific group in disease transmission? Absolutely. As policy, this is officially new, as of last week.
