2015-2016 Application Cycle

Just interviewed yesterday. Super chill and really relaxed interview. They just wanted to get to know you and be able to meet you! I really admire PA Padgett when she spoke yesterday. She is such an amazing woman with a big heart and a great mission/direction for the university.

Michael Wilson said that the first 5 interview batches will hear sometime around later September-mid October! Good luck to everyone else interviewing! :)

Awesome to hear! Do you know what day first interviews started? Also how many will be interviewed in total? How many selected for seats?

First interview group was on August 11th, each interview has 15 applicants. They select 60 students from 10 interview groups ????????

Anyone who has already interviewed or has made plans for their interview -- What hotel did you stay at/plan on staying at (if you are traveling to the interview)?  And does anyone know of a hotel near Touro that offers shuttle service either to the airport to or to the university? Trying to minimize costs where ever possible!

The closest / cheapest hotel is the fiesta casino. Costs $35 a night, followed by Sunset Station Casino, about $45 a night. Both are 5-10 minutes from campus. You can most likely rent a car for $25 via online travel site or through your plane ticket purchase. Unless you want to chance it with getting Uber or a cab. If you want to be really cheap, try AirBnB and crash on some random person's couch or spare bedroom for about $20 a night. Just done stay anywhere east or including Boulder Hwy.

Thank you both! :) I am 24 so that extra 50 dollar underage fee for rental cars makes the price a little rough, haha, But if I add up the costs of taxi fees from the hotel and back and to the school and back, it may end up adding up to the total cost of renting anyways, so maybe I will still consider that option! And thank you for the suggestion of the cheaper hotels Timon, I will probably go with one of those.

I like Sunset Station over Fiesta Casino. A little classier and it's also where I stayed the night before I interviewed at TUN on 10/17/2012. Put $5 on 27 at the roulette table, said I needed some luck having a sub 3.0 GPA and if it hit, I'd be getting accepted. It hit 27, won $175, nailed my interview and was accepted with the first round of acceptances on 11/1/2012 for the c/o 2015. =o)

Maybe some of that luck will pass on to who ever else stays there?

I'm under 25 too, so I understand the rental car problems! I don't remember exactly what the cost is but it's much cheaper to rent a car through fox if you are under 25.

@Timon,

Is anyone in your class doing International rotations? And would you recommend doing one?

Thanks!

We had two cohorts that went on international rotations. One group went in February to Guatemala and another group went to Tanzania in July. Everyone who went had a great experience from what I've gathered. You get to do a lot of procedures, see lots of patients, get to play tourist during your downtime, and most of all, you get to make a positive impact for people who desperately need medical care.

The trips cost a fair amount of money, about $5k-$8k depending on where you're going. The issue with international rotations is that it takes up an elective rotation. We had a classmate who went on a rotation, ended up having a snafu and couldn't do their elective dermatology rotation.

For me, I wanted to do an elective rotation in surgery to get more procedures logged in and to setup an ICU floor rotation for my electives. Unfortunately that didn't work out due to reasons beyond my control as well as TUNs. Additionally I have a wife and kids that were in another state that gave priority over the international rotations.

To answer your question, it really depends on you. If I was young, no kids, and had room in my budget to go, I think it would be worth it, pending you don't have another specialty you're interested in that doesn't line up with a core rotation.

Thanks Timon!

Definitely a great way to learn about other cultures, diseases, therapies, etc. And, as you said, bring some help to those in need. win-win
