2015-2016 Duke University Application Thread

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

For those interviewing, where are you staying? Also how do you plan to get to campus? Im thinking about the Duke Tower and then just walking to campus which should a be 15-20 min walk. Also I'll probably fly in at 11:30PM the night before my interview. Would it be simple to get a cab or something to Duke Tower? Do my travel plans seem ok? Thanks!

I haven't interviewed at Duke, but with my experience from my first PA school interview, I highly advise against flying in that close to your interview unless you absolutely have to. Due to maintenance issues and flight delays that were out of my control, I missed my connecting flight and was actually stuck in the airport until the next morning. Fortunately I had left a "buffer" day, otherwise I would've arrived 2 hours before my interview that morning. I've flown to 3 interviews so far and you just never know, flying is unpredictable!

For this of you who have interviewed, how is parking at the Physician Assistant program building? Is there ample free parking or would I have to purchase a guest parking pass for the day?

Thanks!

The PA program is located in downtown Durham and not on the Duke university or medical center campus. There are reserved guest spots for people interviewing right outside the door you will enter for your interview.

I stayed at aloft durham. It just opened so the rates were very reasonable for the quality of the hotel. It was less than a half mile from the program- I just walked there that morning which kept things simple

I've been obsessed with checking my email too! I tell myself I have to wait until certain times of the day to check it in order to try to keep the obsession under control. This process has been an emotional roller coaster! Right? Well deserved congratulations to those interviewing and to those accepted! And all the best to everyone else out there going through this grueling process. You're not alone!

Here's my situash:

CASPA Verified              07/09

Duke Supplemental         08/12

Under Review Email       08/19

No other news since         :-(

Congratulations! Which day did you interview? I interviewed on Thursday last week, still nervously waiting.

I interview on the 13th and found out the 19th I got in.

Hi everyone! I knew that Duke's supplemental application would be a beast, but I was just curious if anyone had experience with the patient care and shadowing tabs? Here is what I am struggling with:
      - PATIENT CARE: can the description be the same as on my CASPA? And what exactly should I be putting for the agreeable and disagreeable aspects of my responsibilities?
      - Shadowing: can I put the same descriptions as my CASPA?
Thanks guys! Best of luck to everyone!

Hi PAs as Pre-PAs: I am fortunate enough to say that I have a choice of PA programs to choose from- Emory and Duke. I have visited both schools during the interview, and both are impressive. I’ll be moving with my husband, who will need to find a job wherever we end up, and it seems like Atlanta may have more opportunities for jobs in his field (landscape architecture). I’m thrilled but a bit stumped as to which to choose. I’d sincerely appreciate some insight from those that are familiar with the programs. What would be on your pro and con list? Thank you!

      Hello!
As I come closer to making some tough decisions regarding programs, I am hoping to gather information and opinions from current students from the above programs or perhaps students who have interviewed at a combination of the above programs. More specifically, I am wanting to know if any students, interviewees, or alumni would be willing to share their personal experiences regarding 1) best and strongest aspects of the program 2) aspects that could be improved upon 3) level of support from faculty/program resources and 4) anything you were surprised about after matriculating into the program. I’d also like to know about any goofy things (location, parking, student perks) that you’d consider a plus or minus about the program.
I have interviewed and been accepted into two of these programs and interview at the third fairly soon. I really love each for different reasons...proximity to spouse, culture of the area, resources, etc., but find that having interviewed with so many programs back-to-back, I wish I would have conversed with current students during the interview day more extensively (interview and travel fatigue... 😶)
Anyhow, I would appreciate any and all comments.
      Thanks!

Recent applicant accepted to multiple NC schools. Wondering if it is worthwhile to attend some of the private, high-ranked schools or if it makes more sense to favor in-state tuition, especially with sights set on primary care?
Schools I applied to: Duke, Wake, Campbell, UNC, ECU
Would appreciate insight into any of the above programs, and whether the private schools really do give you a leg up!
      Thank you!

I know it is early in the cycle, but I figured I would start a thread! Who else is applying? I am hoping to submit by end of next week!
