Torshi
Is it possible to do three 12hr, +/- an addtl hr - back to back shifts then have the rest of the week off? So, that's about 36-40 hrs a week in 3 days. Gives the rest of the week time for per diem/time off
akdEM
Others may know better than I, but there aren't a lot of these jobs out there. In an ED that sees more than 10 pts per day, working 36 hours straight seems unsafe...
Boatswain2PA
If you are willing to work in rural areas you can get 72 hour shifts. And they often pay better per hour than the 8 hour shifts!

Moderator EMEDPA Posted April 19, 2015 Moderator Share Posted April 19, 2015 you have to get very rural for 72 hr shifts. I know of just a handful and most are in the midwest, like Boat's job. 12s and 24s are much more common. one of my per diem jobs is very rural and they schedule 12s and 24s only, although if covering for someone you may occasionally work a 36 or 48. if anyone knows of 72 hr shifts outside of Kansas, oklahoma, or the dakotas please post that info here. Moderator True Anomaly Posted April 19, 2015 Moderator Share Posted April 19, 2015 This is not an unusual schedule for me, although I routinely only work 9-10 hr shifts with some 12's thrown in occasionally. 14 shifts/month My old job was 3 shifts a week, 12 hours per shift. Which equaled out to 12 shifts/month for full time. It was pretty nice
dndandrea
The PAs in the ER at the hospital I work at do 12 hour shifts, 10a-10p.

SoCalPA
Is the quality of life when you're working 3 days in a row 12 hour shifts? Do you think that's too much? would you be too tired?
browndog
I'm old. Yes, 3 12s can be tough in a busy ED.
Evolute
Im in Montana and currently work in two hospitals. One is scheduled 12 or 24 hour shifts. the other is 24, 48, 72 hour shifts. In the past I have worked locums in eastern Montana and regularly worked 63-72 hours shifts.

ohiovolffemtp
I do 3, and occasionally 4, 12's a week. Depending upon how busy, I tend to have patients+procedures = ~24 most shifts. Since I usually work 3p-3a, I'm pretty much beat after 3 and certainly after 4, in a row.
Moderator EMEDPA Posted April 27, 2015 Moderator Share Posted April 27, 2015 I tend to work 3-5 12s in a row then be off for a few days and repeat. recently I picked up 2 24s in a week I was already working 4 12s. yes, I was tired...96 hrs in 6 days, but how often can you make 7k in a week?
