alisons104
Hi Everyone, I am a second year PA student who is very interested in working in EM. Unfortunately, I am moving to a remote small town that does not welcome PAs or NPs into their ED. Being the type of person who doesn't take no for an answer, I'm looking for as much data as possible to strengthen my argument. Unfortunately, most of the research out there appears to be more social -- Patient Satisfaction-- and I've had a difficult time finding the hard data to prove that we increase efficiency and decrease costs. I was wondering if any of you know of any articles discussing these topics? Thank you for any help you can provide- Alison

alisons104
Thank you! I have looked through all of their resources and they mention the cost effectiveness, but nowhere does it list the source. Any idea where I can find articles that have proven the cost effectiveness? Or is it simply, PAs make less money, so if a PA is doing the exact same job as a physician would do, it is therefore cost effective?
Moderator EMEDPA Posted March 22, 2011 Moderator Share Posted March 22, 2011 Review articles online written by rod hooker pa, phd, he probably did a study with the info you need. also, it is obvious. if a pa and a doc do the same job and the doc makes 20 dollars more/hr then a group saves big bucks staffing pa's more than docs. at my primary job we staff pa's solo at night because of this. when docs work at this facility they are 100% interchangeable with pa's. we trade shifts pa to doc with no issue. we staff pa's 24/7 and docs on day shift only. The best article is about 20 years old but it has a good breakdown of the cost effectiveness: http://www.annemergmed.com/article/S0196-0644%2805%2982051-7/abstract This article from the BMJ is newer but specific to British workforce issues: http://www.bmj.com/content/323/7323/1244.extract here is a very recent Hooker article: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21166731 This is the Hooker article EMEDPA mentioned: http://direct.bl.uk/bld/PlaceOrder.do?UIN=009873521&ETOC=RN&from=searchengine Here is another EM article http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19799572 This is a nice paper from Ontario on flow improvements with PAs and NPs http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19788790
