gpangind
Hi! Question for the first years. I was looking at the student housing information page. What's the best time (month-wise) to call about availability? I remember some mention about how it would be tricky to get a spot since we start in May? ceschlorff
Hello! Would you mind commenting on where you live and why you chose that location? I know some of the students said they live in the Woodlands apartments, while others live in the Navy housing near campus. I live in the navy housing with 3 other students in my class....I really like it! The navy housing is basically across the street from school so its about a 15 min walk or like a 2 min drive. We live in a 4 bedroom townhouse and pay about 350 each per month so it is pretty cheap. There are a few groups of students from our program that all share navy houses like that...A lot of our other classmates live in woodlands. It is a little bit more expensive and the largest apartments they have (I believe) are 2 bedrooms...but its a nice option if you'd rather have 1 roommate instead of 3....it is next door to campus so everyone who lives there pretty much just walks to school....There are a handful of other apartment complexes in the area, but I don't know them as well because navy housing and woodlands are most popular. There is also on campus housing through the school...but from what I know it is a little expensive and its hard for the PAs to live there....We start school in the summer and typically you can't move in to the campus housing until the Fall...so its usually the med students that live there...there might be an earlier move in time, but I remember it being kind of tricky when I looked in to it...hope that helps! I figured maybe we should get a RFUMS Class of 2017 page going or something? https://www.facebook.com/avejones I highly recommend starting a fb group for your class! I started ours last year (I am currently the online affairs char lol), and it was a great way to get to know everyone! We set up a couple of events to meet in person, and visited navy housing together, and we also started a chat through there to figure out roommates and living situations, etc. :-)

Thank you so much for the advice! How did you find availability in the navy housing? I was looking a little bit online yesterday, but I wasn't able to find much. ceschlorff
Yeah their website isn't the greatest....when it gets closer you can call and set up an appointment where they will show you the different housing options by calling the "Relocation specialist" phone numbers for forest city. I set up an appointment to go visit the navy housing for the same day as our second look day (or the day before..I don't remember). Second look day is something you will be invited to by the school (just kind of like a visit day). Then I opened it up to the fb group to see if anyone else wanted to go with me...so we ended up having a decent group of about 10 people go all together. If you aren't in the area, they can give you a lot of information over the phone and via e-mail. I think we visited around the end of Feb....There is kind of like a time limit on applying...I don't remember if its 60 days or 90 days...but it works like..if you want to move in in May, you can't submit your application any earlier than 60/90 days prior to the move in date...because they only keep your application on file for that amount of time...so when you need to apply kind of varies by when you want to move in....Last year, they reassured us that they don't typically have trouble finding housing for the students...I don't remember hearing of anyone in our class having toruble finding navy housing...Woodlands, however, typically has a waitlist and potentially can be tricker to get into....I think with them its better to get on their waiting list sooner rather than later
