marsle85 Posted August 11, 2014 Hey there- I have already taken: Anatomy (and its lab) = 4 credits Physiology (No lab) = 4 credits For some reason, SUNY Buffalo (the LARGEST school in the 64 school SUNY system) does not offer a physiology lab. Just physiology. Obviously, physiology lab is required for admission to most PA programs. My problem? NONE of my local colleges offer physiology on its own! They only offer Anatomy and Physiology I and II and their corresponding labs. These are the schools I have checked: Bryant and Stratton Buffalo State College Daemen College D'Youville College Erie Community College Hilbert College Houghton College ITT Technical Institute Medaille College Niagara County Community College Niagara University State University of New York at Buffalo Villa Maria College The ONLY school that offers physiology on its own WITH a lab, is Canisius, a small, private school and whose class is already full. What do I do!?
Maynard Posted August 11, 2014 That is extremely strange to have a 4-credit Physiology class and not have one of those credits belong to a lab. In my own coursework, I do have a lab listed for my A&P classes, but that "lab" (in quotation marks) was nothing like the labs I had for Chem or Micro -- there was a lab period but no required activities or lab reports. If I hadn't read "with lab" on the course description I would have finished those classes without even realizing I had done a lab and racked up 2 lab credits. Are you absolutely positive you didn't do a lab?
WIPANC Posted August 11, 2014 I ran into this same problem as my undergrad institution also did not offer Physiology lab, nor did any nearby schools- plus I didn't want to take a whole additional sequence. So, basically my course of action was to choose schools that did not require a Physiology lab first. A few of the schools I really wanted to apply to required Physiology lab. I contacted these schools with a list of what courses I had taken and attached the syllabi, explaining the situation. All but one school accepted the A&P courses that I had completed. So, my recommendation would be to talk to the schools you want to apply to and go from there. Good luck!
paynesm Posted August 11, 2014 It's an hour drive from the greater Buffalo area but Monroe Community College in Rochester has a a 4 credit Physiology class w/ lab. They have many sections including Saturdays so if you make haste you might find a chair. Best of luck
SJH716 Posted August 11, 2014 Labs are usually listed as a separate course, at Erie Community College they are listed as: BI150-A&P-3 credits BI151-Lab for BI150-1 credit You may want to double check UB's course schedule.
Whitcc1 Posted August 11, 2014 I have no clue if these courses will work out for you, however, one of my advisors sent me this link to take care of prerecs... I figured you could take a look :) http://nursing.jhu.edu/academics/programs/prerequisites/index.html

Are you absolutely positive you didn't do a lab? Unfortunately, yes. I contacted the instructor asking if he was aware of the school offering the lab, and he said they didn't. :( Isn't it crazy? I ran into this same problem as my undergrad institution also did not offer Physiology lab, nor did any nearby schools- plus I didn't want to take a whole additional sequence. I contacted one of the universities I'm applying to, and the woman told me that the physiology lab was required. I asked if taking the "anatomy and physiology" lab component would suffice, considering I already had the anatomy/lab pair. Her literal response? "No. And you must take the anatomy and physiology I and II classes, PLUS their labs, to qualify". Oh, okay- because I have 9k to spend on classes I've already taken? You gotta love the bureaucracy of college schooling. That being said, I did stop there in my investigation. I will continue asking. Thank you! Searching Monroe CC now! :) Labs are usually listed as a separate course, at Erie Community College they are listed as:BI150-A&P-3 creditsBI151-Lab for BI150-1 creditYou may want to double check UB's course schedule. Unfortunately I confirmed UB not providing a physiology lab with the physiology director. :( I have no clue if these courses will work out for you, however, one of my advisors sent me this link to take care of prerecs... SHU-CH Posted August 11, 2014 I was in the same boat - I had taken both physio and micro courses with no labs and this was going to hinder my application to PA school. I wound up taking A&P II with a lab and micro with a lab at a local community college to meet the entry requirements. You should just check with the schools you intend to apply to in order to ensure a substitution will be acceptable.
fakingpatience Posted August 12, 2014 If Monroe doesn't work, what about UNE online? http://online.une.edu/science-prerequisites/online-medical-physiology/
Maynard Posted August 12, 2014 This is a long shot, but I would have a sit-down with the your school's biology department chair and explain the situation. PA programs can't be the only ones that require physiology lab, and there's no reason a school of that size can't offer coursework that a lot of students will need. They might be able to start a course rather quickly (I mean it's a one credit course). They might be able to offer you some kind of independent study option. At the very least, they should be made aware of how their course offerings are affecting students.
marsle85 Posted August 14, 2014 Author Just checked with the community college an hour away... they only accept students who are taking the lab and lecture. AHHH! Okay. Super candid question: how bad would it be to just take anatomy and physio lab I? and hope that if accepted, they will let it pass?
Maynard Posted August 14, 2014 I think A&P lab would only suffice if it's taken for both sections (I & II) of the course. This means either find a school that offers the labs separately or take 8 credits to cover a 1 credit lab requirement. What's to stop you from just taking it at Canisius in the Spring Semester? Most schools will allow you some outstanding credits to be completed before matriculation.

When my daughter started PA school, they wanted original transcripts sent from everywhere she had taken any college courses even though CASPA requires original transcripts. A local community college where she took two pre-reqs ( that no other school requires ) refused to send the transcripts until they got original transcripts from the university where she got her B.Sc. I wouldn't expect much special help, especially as a non degree candidate. Sent from my Kindle Fire HDX using Tapatalk 2
