DC45
I plan to be done with the pre reqs for PA school after next summer and would like to then pursue becoming a paramedic. There is no degree I am interested in earning at a 4 year University so my question is, once I finish my pre reqs for PA school, can I leave my 4 year University and use the courses required to become a paramedic to complete a bachelors degree? Would a college award me with a degree in biology or some sort of health sciences with all of my science courses from the pre reqs on top of paramedic school? Thank you for your time. pmed8
There is going to be a lot of crossover between your prereqs for PA and Paramedic prereqs. If the classes transfer between the two schools you should be fine. Here where I am at Paramedic is an AAS degree. I would suggest a biology, physiology, health sciences degree, or a degree that interests you. There are Paramedic bachelor's degrees out there. Just have to look around to find the right fit. MedicinePower
There are some paramedic bachelor degrees but they are still pretty rare. Becoming an EMT and then a paramedic after finishing your bachelor degree is an excellent way to get HCE and learn prehospital emergency medicine, but most paramedic programs are associate degrees. I've been an EMT for over a decade and feel pretty comfortable in emergencies and also very comfortable examining a patient. That being said make sure you finish a bachelor degree in a field that will allow you to do all the pre-reqs and maybe a few "extras" in order to make you stand out. Lyndhurst
Something that maybe helpful is to inquire at your nearest University about doing an Independent Studies degree. Some of my colleagues from work are doing this at the local State University. This is allowing them to use their Paramedic classes as part of their degree plan. It does require a fair bit of work in setting up but the school has been really helpful and will work with you to make a degree plan (at least according to one of the people taking this road). In any event it will allow you to get a more tailored degree than the usual Biology/Health Sciences path. It couldn't hurt to contact your local University and ask if this is an option.
