Your science GPA is not terrible, but I think you should broaden your horizons and search for schools that take a more holistic approach to reviewing your application. You have a decent amount of patient care hours, but getting some time with a PA would be beneficial. What are the percentiles for each section of your GRE? If any of them are below 50%, I would recommend re-taking it. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! I have about 50 more hrs shadowing a PA now and they are writing me a reccomendation. I also have ~2,800 DPC hrs now. I have not re-taken the GRE... I'm not sure, but I think my quantitative score was below the 50th percentile. I'm trying to find schools where I'm a good fit, with a more holistic approach, but I'm having trouble...

That's great! You could search around on this forum- lots of people have discussed which programs have traditionally accepted students with a wide range of GPAs. University of Charleston and Touro Univ-CA are some that I'm aware of.

I am mainly concerned with my direct patient contact experience. For many of the programs I am just around the min (1,000 hrs). I am applying to programs that have lower minimums, but there are many other applicants with much more experience. Furthermore, I have a pretty mediocre verbal score on the GRE. It'll be an expensive application journey, but hopefully it will all be worth it. As a fresh graduate, I would be beyond happy to be accepted into any one of the programs listed above.

For my first try I only applied to local schools, for various reasons. Also I only applied to schools not requiring the GRE. I have taken 4 science classes since that application, all As, and I plan to shadow that PA again in her primary care facility, and perhaps get her to write a better letter. I am also considering asking my current supervisor to write me a letter as opposed to my old one. Not that the letter was bad, but maybe a fresh and current perspective was necessary. Due to a very recent diagnosis in the family I am unable to take an EMT or MA course while going to school to refresh my Anatomy and Physiology courses, so the prior phlebotomy experience will have to stay. I also can't take the pay cut at the moment because my family member cannot work and I'm fully supporting the household.

For my current application I am expanding towards the mid-West and more in New England. I am taking a GRE course soon, and plan to take the exam mid July. Any input is absolutely appreciated!!!

You should have gotten in somewhere with those stats. Honestly you just probably applied too late in the cycle or had an underwhelming personal statement or LORs

I definitely applied too late. Stony Brook rejected me a day after getting my app.

I think the PA's LOR could have been sub-par, just because of the nature of the situation. We hardly knew each other and we had conflicting work schedules (we work in the same facility) so I wasn't able to shadow as much as I would have liked. I will try to speak with her more about this. This cycle I am also applying to the school she graduated from, so maybe that would be a plus to their ad-com.

Another thing was that an individual writing the academic LOR became a big shot while I was applying and was very overwhelmed and short on time. I will attempt to get a hold of the guy to see what can be done about the previous letter, because he really oversaw much of my undergrad and post bacc "career" so I think his letter is really beneficial to my application.

I am also currently rewriting my PS from scratch, so that should help.

I think I got everything. The biggest problem that I think I have is my GPA. I was 18 in 2003 and failed a bunch of classes because I wasn't ready for college. Even though they were more than 10 years ago they still drag me down. Ive retaken all of them and gotten A's in everything except for Gen Chem 2 which was a B+. So unless a program looks at most recently completed coursework it feels like I haven't got a chance.

Jenna..I am a registered dental hygienist. Does anyone know if this counts toward my 2000 hours of direct hands on experience?

I'm curious if you went on to become a PA. I have 11 years experience as an RDH and just worry that it won't be taken seriously as direct patient care.
