CHS Charlotte NC fellowship experience?

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

Curious if anyone here has been through/applied/is enrolled in the CHS fellowship program. If so, I would appreciate the chance to pick your brain. Please pm me if you're willing to discuss your experience.

Also curious what people think of their UC and FP tracks? Compared to high acuity settings, these seem less "necessary" than advanced training but I am drawn to them nonetheless.

Thanks much.

I'm not enrolled in any of them, but I've looked pretty closely at that residency. Like you, I wonder just how useful it would be to do a residency in UC or FP. I'm sure it would be valuable, but it seems like a much smaller benefit than you would get in something like EM or critical care.

I'd like to hear from anyone who has done one of these CHS fellowships...

CHS had a core set of fellowships back last summer and seem to be adding one or two options every few months. My impression of this track is a strategic move by CHS to get ACPs trained in their method (so to speak) and build a very broad and specialized workforce to meet "growing demand" amongst rising pt population. Great business move for them, and possibly great news for pas and nps...if the compensation is competitive (signing bonus is nice)

To PAs in practice; what are your opinions of the fm and im options? Just in general...

I support FP and IM residencies and they could equip a PA/NP beyond the basics if done right.   I would love to do one if it covered more than preventive care, etc.  In-depth training on caring for diabetes, lung disease, heart disease, GI issues, etc., plus threw in some hospitalist type training.

I agree CHS has made a smart move.  Quality of the residency is the key.

It is nice to see the collaboration between PA/NP disciplines and I am impressed with the offerings.   This is the type of post-graduate training that should be offered nationwide by teaching hospitals, etc.    It would do much for both professions and would probably help physicians to stop saying we are unsafe providers and accept what we add to the patient care.

Also the CHS recognizes that we are not mid-levels and calls us advanced practitioners.  NIce.

Agreed! It is thorough all the way around. Have plans to contact and find out more; will share whatever I find out.

Sorry to chime in late, my name is Cragin Greene I am the PA fellowship director for the above referenced ACP fellowship program. The above string is correct in that we are a new post graduate training program offering 10 specialty tracks. Our first cohort started in October 2013 and will graduate in Oct 2014.  Each specialty track has a physician medical director, and ACP coordinator in addition to many participating physicians and ACPs in the system. Each track consists of weekly didactic sessions, extensive patient contact hours, simulation center time, focused skills training and credentialing, journal club, case study conferences, grand rounds, various CME opportunities, and PA/NP collaboration throughout the fellowship. I am happy to answer any general or specific questions through the forum or by phone or email.

I'll be starting at CHS in October.  Is anyone else from the boards going to be there also?

Did you apply for a residency or is this employment?  I forget when you graduate!!!

I finish up in August and am starting CHS' hospitalist residency. I got a good vibe from the program when interviewing and the facilities were really nice. I also like the heavy didactic component that is included. Charlotte seems like an awesome place to live, especially after I've been in the desert for the last couple of years.

Hi,

I was curious about what the stipend per year is during the fellowships?  Thanks.

Smart business move for CHS with the various residencies  offered  and then the CHS   employment opportunities for those who have trained in their system.
I think this would be a great move for the new grad to gain experience. Congrats and enjoy!

Any impression of how competitive the application process is? I'm thinking about applying to start in April, but just not sure how many eggs to put in that basket...

Each program I interviewed at was very competitive.  Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
