More Misinformation . . . If You Want to Get Involved With This

Recommended Posts

PA for Physician Associate posted this on their FB page:

This morning, on WCBS in New York, Wall Street Journal reporter Joe Connelly said that “Nurse Practitioners want to be able to treat patients without supervision from a doctor in more states. Nurse Practitioners have more training than Physician Assistants, whose roles are also growing.”

Since then, the AAPA has responded to WCBS as well as many individuals trying to get them to correct their story. If you want to add your voice to ours you can contact the station at: Contact WCBS at http://newyork.cbslocal.com/about-us/contact-us/.

I sent them the following:

As a physician assistant I wanted to inform you this statement is inaccurate. The typical nurse practitioner master's degree has 35 credit hours of master's collegiate level courses and 500 hours of clinical exposure. The typical physician assistant master's degree has over 60 master's level collegiate courses with over 1000 hours of clinical exposure. Many NP schools also have completely online programs. As for the doctorate of nurse practitioner, this is optional and has no reflection of licensure at this time.

Respectfully,

Sean Kramer, MSHS, PA-C

AAPA also posted it on their Facebook page. The response from PAs was interesting and lively discussion ensued. More than I have ever seen on AAPA FB site. If you all have FB accounts go there and read the comments.

How do these people get SUCH wrong information? Where are they even getting this info?

From the nurses, of course. The PA profession likes to believe we're all a team and help each other but while we're busy trying to make friends, other professions are ready to throw us under the bus at any chance they get.
