ohiovolffemtp
Are there states where PA's can serve as the primary medical director for EMS agencies? In Ohio (my state) they can not. A portion of this may be that in Ohio PA's may not prescribe schedule II medications, which are common parts of paramedic protocols. Also, are there states where a PA, e.g. one working in an ER, can provide online medical direction to an EMS unit calling in for orders? Again, in Ohio, only an MD or DO can. Thanks
Moderator EMEDPA Posted December 28, 2010 Moderator Share Posted December 28, 2010 yup, pa's serve as ems medical directors and do online medical control in many states. ohio is probably the worst state in the nation to work as a pa. top 3 anyway as indiana and louisianna suck also. sbellin
In Washington State, EMS medical directors must be MD's or DO's. I have worked with assisting the director for years; but PA's still must function under the authority of a physician so while I can not fill the title of medical directror I can fill the role. medicosimm
I have most of my friends working in Ohio state with many difficulties. I think it needs some advancements in its technique.
ffemt34
In South Central CT, as a paramedic riding for medical control, you must ride with a specific PA who grants the Med Con and as far as online medical direction, usually an MD/DO give that, but a PA can give online med direction to EMS in the field

Moderator EMEDPA Posted December 31, 2010 Moderator Share Posted December 31, 2010 Good practice laws , broad scope of practice, unlimited prescribing authority, ability to own their own clinics.

sbellin
I'm curious if in Montana a PA serves as medical director is there is still a doc supervising the PA and what supervisory responsibilities are required of them?
Moderator True Anomaly Posted March 9, 2011 Moderator Share Posted March 9, 2011 I'm currently working on a research project of PA's involvement in EMS as per state legislation. Montana is the ONLY state in the US where PA's are specifically listed in legislation as being allowed to be solo medical directors of an EMS agency...and nothing is listed as being required to have a supervising physician medical director.
