On-call Compensation

Recommended Posts

Are there specific resources that I can share with potential employers that will show that PAs are paid for on-call services--and to what extent? I have seen several posts here about what is standard (25-50% of the hourly rate, more for weekend or actually going in to assist with surgery, etc.) but I would like to have specific resources to show employers. Previous interviews with potential employers who have expected that the PA take call also expect not to pay anything for this service; only a substandard salary 73K-80K (endocrinology, vascular surgery, family practice and pediatrics) which would have included 24/7 call one week a month--one position would include being on-call for 12 clinics. Any suggestions are much appreciated. (I have 4.5 years experience in IM/UC and have not had to take call before)

I'm not sure if you're still interested, but our surgery call schedule works out to be 3 days/month and 1 weekend/month. We have a flat rate of for the days and also a flat rate for the weekend. So if you don't get called in or only get called once or twice on a day of call, then it works out to my benefit, anymore than that it is to their benefit. I hope that helps.

I would NOT do it for less then 25% of your hourly rate

This is a HUGE issue with physicians and quality of life and that is why they want us to do it.... if we do it for free we just cheapen ourselves.....

Somewhere there needs to be compensation for call, PTO, comp time, pay, extra $$ - something - otherwise just suggest the doc takes the call (if they are suggesting it is  not that big of a deal)

And DO NOT let them say "it's just part of the job" and  "all our doc's do it" - the response should be either "I am not a doc, and it is not part of the job for a PA" or "pay me what you pay a doc and I will take it.."

if you search the internet there is a few consulting firms that have released reports on the ER call coverage for PCP's and specialist - goes from anywhere for $1000 per weekend up from there to around $4000-5000 if my memory serves me correctly.....  this is not something we should be giving away....
