    Duties on Rotations

I have recently started a rotation at an ER. I am being asked to do lots of EKGs, transport patients to the floor, put them in gowns, getting blankets, helping them with bed pans and changing diapers. I'm not above these tasks, but I'm just not sure if this is the norm. I'm being assigned way more of these duties than getting to see patients or perform procedures. Has anyone else had a similar experience in an ER? TIA

    What is the process...

What is the process of creating a clinical site or at least an affiliation with a doctor or organization for one student to do a rotation at? I have been desperately trying to get clinical rotations in CA, my home, while I am currently out of state. I have situational depression and I know that being able to do rotations back at home would help immensely with my focus, happiness, and health, but my school won't budge in helping me. Their reasoning was that it's too much work for them to make affiliations with new sites. I have found doctors willing to take me in for rotations though, so the only thing left would be the paperwork which I thought was in large part filled out by the preceptor. Does anyone know anything about this, and if so, could you please help me understand?
  4. My name is Alexandra I am a 1st year PA student in my second semester at Barry University in Florida. It has always been an aspiration of mine to move to Hawaii and build a life there. I was hoping to get some advice on who to contact for available rotations for PA students. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
  5. Hi, So here's the story. I am beginning my first rotation and it is in the ED (no previous ED or UC experience). My preceptors are all very nice and willing to help, but I can't help but feeling like I am neither measuring up nor reflecting my program well. I wanted to get some feedback to gauge if this is a normal experience, as there are no other PA students at my site to compare notes with. I received an hour training on the EHR and beginning the second day was expected to see a few patients on my own and present them to my preceptor with assessment and plan. This wouldn't be a problem except that I am very slow in addition to having forgotten a lot of the medicine (I have a 3.8+ GPA from didactic year, but once I took the test most of the info seemed to blur into general confusion). I have no idea what to do with the mass of lab results from the current and previous ED encounters, nor sure that I've ruled out even 50% of the serious conditions. I am also very slow at charting (for reference, my program allowed multiple days to finish one entire SOAP or H&P note). I am also very poor at multi-tasking, which is an awful quality for the ED. I know I am trying and that I am reasonably intelligent, but this makes me think I should have stuck with some desk job rather than managing healthcare. For all of these reasons I can tell that I am a drain on the preceptors who are already busy. I get that I am here to learn from the preceptors, but can't help but feel that this is not how things should be. I do ask for feedback, but the preceptors are SO nice that I can't tell what they truly think. I'd appreciate any advice, what's normal, whats not, etc.
  6. Dear East Bay PAs, I begin PA school in January of 2018 and beginning in March our program is placing us into what they call Longitudinal Clinical Experience (LCE), where we spend time in a primary care, family practice or internal medicine practice for 4-5 hours one day a week for the remainder of the didactic year (through December 2018) in order to get mentorship and training in patient care. I have been in research and healthcare for a long time now (7+ years), and have quite a bit of prior clinic experience and patient exposure across the UCSF network both in San Francisco and Oakland. Unfortunately because my work has always been in specialty clinics I do not have a network of colleagues and prior mentors in primary care/internal medicine. If you are a certified PA, MD or DO in primary care/IM in the Contra Costa or Alameda counties and are willing to accept a student in 2018, I would love the opportunity to speak with you. I am happy to send my CV to you as well. If you know anyone who might be interested, I would appreciate your referral as well. Thanks very much!
  7. Hi, I am a physician assistant student in Boston, Massachusetts. I will be starting my clinical rotations this coming May and am searching for clinical rotations in the Kansas City area. I am hoping to move to KC after graduation so I would love to do a rotation around that area. Does anyone know any PAs/MDs in the Kansas City area that are willing to precept students for any of their rotations? Or any tips on how to set up an out of state rotation? Thanks!
  8. Hey there, I wanted to start a thread where students could chime in to share their experiences while on rotation. I will post one of mine below from my blog PAjourney.com. 10. Had a question for anyone that is currently in their 2nd year or for anyone in the field of orthopedics. My school is offering a rotation in England with a concentration in orthopedics. I am very interested in going but I am wondering how employers will look at this. As of now, I'm thinking i want to go into ortho after graduation but am worried that an employer will wonder why I did an ortho rotation somewhere other than the US. Would anyone be able to share some insight or their opinion? I would really appreciate it. Thanks

  13. Hi all, I'm looking into starting a surgical first assist business. It will be basically a company of one, myself. I have read if you are a professional who requires any type of license to work in a specific state, then it'll be better to PLLC or Inc your business and not LLC. I live and work in NJ and will not be traveling outside of my state to work. Which type of business is the best for me? PLLC, LLC, Inc? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

    Clinical rotation sites?

Hey guys, I'm curious as far as what rotation sites MDC is currently offering their PA students. I am aware that Jackon's Ryder Trauma Center and the county Medical Examiner's office are currently in use....but which other ones are there? Thanks!
  16. Program 1 does all or most of their clinical rotations in 1 semi-rural facility. Program 2 does rotations at various spots throughout the state. Can you help me come up with a Pros and Cons of each? Would program 1 students be less qualified when looking for jobs because they didn't move around during clinicals?
  17. Hey All, I'm currently about to enter my clinical year of rotations. I'm a Michigan native but am attending PA school out of state. I'm looking to do my rotations back in Michigan. I'd having problems setting up rotations because most hospitals already have contracts with local PA programs and won't take me as a student. Are there any fellow Michiganders that have any resources on preceptors? Thanks! -ProspectPA

    Chicago OB/GYN rotation?

Hello Illinois! I am a second year PA student at Barry University in Miami, FL. I am very interested in finding a rotation in Chicago in Ob/Gyn, preferably in perinatology/maternal-fetal medicine for next year. Obstetrics and gynecology have always greatly interested me, but I eagerly welcome the opportunity to learn about high risk pregnancies. I am aware that some locations require a rotation in Ob/Gyn before working in a specialized field like perinatology, and I would be happy to first complete an OB rotation if needed. In regards to affiliation with Barry University, the clinical coordinator for my program and I are ready to speak to the medical education department of the appropriate hospital(s) to begin an affiliation agreement process. As of right now, my school has scheduled my out-of-state rotation for July 2015 (my last rotation). However, if these dates are inconvenient, I would be willing to accommodate my rotation schedule if necessary. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or need more information! I hope to have the chance to work with someone. Thank you in advance. :)
  22. Hi all, I'm currently a PA-S from in the clinical year and I'm looking for a 5-week rotation in emergency medicine. I'm passionate about emergency medicine and have been on track to work in the ED since becoming an EMT/Paramedic years ago. I'm flexible as to the location, willing to move to anywhere, USA! Ideally from October 6 to November 7, but flexible on the dates as well. Also open to the possibility of working at the ED after graduating if offered. Thanks for any leads you guys can provide!
  23. Hi, My name is Kristin. I'm currently working on my master in NYC and I'm in my clinical rotations year. I'm very eager to start a career in Dermatology but I am having a hard time finding a rotation in Dermatology. My school says they have very few Derm connections and that my chances of getting a rotation in this field are slim. Therefore, I have taken it into my own hands to reach to whom ever I can in order to find a Dermatology preceptor. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much! Kristin

Looking for rotation in the Atlanta area

I'm in my 2nd year of PA school here in Ohio and my wife and I are wanting to move to the north Atlanta area. I graduate in July and will take the PANCE in early August. It would be much easier to find a job in the Atlanta area if I could at least network with some PA's and/or docs there. I've already had the scheduled emergency med rotation and absolutely loved it so I plan to start my career in that field. In early April I have a two week elective rotation so I would love to find a preceptor in an ED that I could work with. If any of you have some contacts I would certainly appreciate a reply. Josh
