  4. What is the process of creating a clinical site or at least an affiliation with a doctor or organization for one student to do a rotation at? I have been desperately trying to get clinical rotations in CA, my home, while I am currently out of state. I have situational depression and I know that being able to do rotations back at home would help immensely with my focus, happiness, and health, but my school won't budge in helping me. Their reasoning was that it's too much work for them to make affiliations with new sites. I have found doctors willing to take me in for rotations though, so the only thing left would be the paperwork which I thought was in large part filled out by the preceptor. Does anyone know anything about this, and if so, could you please help me understand?
  5. Hello, I am nearing the end of my first year in PA school on the east coast and would like to do a rotation in Seattle, WA. I don't know any physicians or PA's out that way. Does anyone know how I could go about finding a preceptor? Thanks

  7. If anyone is willing to undertake a student for an out-of-state rotation this fall for family/peds/ob-gyn/plastics, any information or leads would be highly appreciated! I am currently at Barry University in Miami but am a NYC native and am looking to start making connections in the community as I will be making my return there upon my graduation. 8. Hi, So here's the story. I am beginning my first rotation and it is in the ED (no previous ED or UC experience). My preceptors are all very nice and willing to help, but I can't help but feeling like I am neither measuring up nor reflecting my program well. I wanted to get some feedback to gauge if this is a normal experience, as there are no other PA students at my site to compare notes with. I received an hour training on the EHR and beginning the second day was expected to see a few patients on my own and present them to my preceptor with assessment and plan. This wouldn't be a problem except that I am very slow in addition to having forgotten a lot of the medicine (I have a 3.8+ GPA from didactic year, but once I took the test most of the info seemed to blur into general confusion). I have no idea what to do with the mass of lab results from the current and previous ED encounters, nor sure that I've ruled out even 50% of the serious conditions. I am also very slow at charting (for reference, my program allowed multiple days to finish one entire SOAP or H&P note). I am also very poor at multi-tasking, which is an awful quality for the ED. I know I am trying and that I am reasonably intelligent, but this makes me think I should have stuck with some desk job rather than managing healthcare. For all of these reasons I can tell that I am a drain on the preceptors who are already busy. I get that I am here to learn from the preceptors, but can't help but feel that this is not how things should be. I do ask for feedback, but the preceptors are SO nice that I can't tell what they truly think. I'd appreciate any advice, what's normal, whats not, etc.

  12. Dear East Bay PAs, I begin PA school in January of 2018 and beginning in March our program is placing us into what they call Longitudinal Clinical Experience (LCE), where we spend time in a primary care, family practice or internal medicine practice for 4-5 hours one day a week for the remainder of the didactic year (through December 2018) in order to get mentorship and training in patient care. I have been in research and healthcare for a long time now (7+ years), and have quite a bit of prior clinic experience and patient exposure across the UCSF network both in San Francisco and Oakland. Unfortunately because my work has always been in specialty clinics I do not have a network of colleagues and prior mentors in primary care/internal medicine. If you are a certified PA, MD or DO in primary care/IM in the Contra Costa or Alameda counties and are willing to accept a student in 2018, I would love the opportunity to speak with you. I am happy to send my CV to you as well. If you know anyone who might be interested, I would appreciate your referral as well. Thanks very much!

  17. So this is essentially my first rodeo when it comes to negotiating a contract offer. Reading up on it now and came across this statement. Source: http://cheekyscientist.com/12-tips-on-how-to-negotiate-a-job-offer-to-increase-your-starting-salary/ Based on your experience, is this a good way to go about things. I'm trying to negotiate this contract (http://www.physicianassistantforum.com/index.php?/topic/41261-family-med-offer-need-advice/), and i don't know if i should ask for everything at once or separately, like the author of the article suggests. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

  24. Is there any hope for someone who has attended and dropped out of multiple colleges over the past 8 years due to lack of direction and motivation? How much worse would it be if his/her overall gpa is 2.5 and science gpa is 2.0? Long story short, I had no idea what to do with my life and my grades fluctuated dramatically due to lack of motivation at times. I took a year off to figure out what I want in life, improve my study skills, and explore the medical field. Now I know, without doubt, that I want to be a PA, but I'm afraid I've already done too much damage with the constant dropping out and low gpa. Is there any hope? Thanks for your help.
  25. Hi everyone, can some kind people help me understand all about precepting. What is the difference between a preceptor, a mentor or a professor/instructor? Don't PA schools usually assign preceptors to students before clinicals or didactics? Do you find your own in PA school, or do you have to wait until you are working in the field? How do you find one? Is there a list? How available are they for you? How qualified are they? Do they get paid? Do they volunteer their time? Are there goals that need to be met between both parties or just one? Do they follow you from room to room or do you follow them? How long are they with you? Is this something required before you graduate? I thought I understood how it works, but now I am not to sure.
