  1. Hey all, As there seems to be a lot of growing interest in EM PA residencies across the country, I just thought I'd start this to (hopefully) offer answers to any burning questions you guys have about EM residency in general or at Iowa in particular. Ask away! I'll edit this initial post to include all Q&A to make it easier on the reader. Who I am: Year-1 EM PA resident at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC); Graduated from South University - Tampa C/O 2015; formerly trained as EMT, paramedic. ***Obligatory disclaimer: I do not represent UIHC, nor the EM P
  2. Hi there, EM PA here, our group is looking to moving towards single doc/PA coverage overnight, whereas we previously ended shifts around 1am. Wondering who of you staff overnight shifts and if you receive an overnight differential pay bump. If so, what is it? If you're more comfortable contacting me directly would be GREAT help. Attempting to get some data together to show higher ups its common for overnight diff in EM world. Also please include what state you work in. Thank you in advance!!!!
  3. I’ve been having some discussions about doing a CCM residency at my institution after completing my residency. Everyone seems interested in me doing it. A few things would have to be altered such as my current residency would have to be extended 4 months (for a total of 22 months) to coincide with the start of the fellowship, which they also seem interest in doing. In exchange I would also get more elective time. I’d prefer this over doing locums so it would be a simple transition, but isn’t necessary. The CCM residency is a year long and pays about 7-10k more than I make now (which isn’t much
  4. I am hoping to get a sense from a variety of EM residency grads what their experiences were like at their jobs after residency. Specifically, were you able to get the hospital/group to credential you for procedures that other PA's in the group don't do, and is your scope of practice reflective of your training? Did you work at a place that had never had a residency trained grad before? Did you find it was easier to negotiate a higher salary than your peers? I'm considering going back for a residency, but I've honestly never worked in a place where PA's have a wide scope of practice, so I'
  5. Hi everyone, I am currently a PA practicing in urgent care/ER ( 4 years of experience) looking to switch my job closer to home. I was wondering if I can get your guys' input for an ER offer i just received. $70/hour + RVU, 120 hours/month in considered full time, $1500 for CME no PTO, no sick leave Malpractice/health/dental included Currently, I work at a ER (teaching institute) that pays $50/hour, 12 paid holidays/year, 2 weeks PTO, 12 sick days, great health/dental insurance, malpractice covered, i get about $1500 for CME, and pensi
  6. I am shadowing an Emergency Medicine Resident PA in the next few days and am looking for some advice. I have not met the PA I am shadowing yet but I just want to make sure I do my best and I am as helpful as possible without overstepping. I understand the obvious things one would never do but am wondering if anyone has any helpful advice or tips from their first shadowing experience, or if any current PAs have suggestions that they look for when a student is shadowing. Any stories, tips, or advice, is welcomed and appreciated!
  7. Hello, I'm graduating in August and am planning to take the PANCE in mid September and start work at an ED on a Native American reservation in the fall. I'm interested in finding out if/how EM providers manage to take advantage of IHS loan repayment programs. It seems to me that the work requirements by the loan repayment program (LRP) are quite restrictive and wouldn't work very well for clustered blocks of shifts like I plan to do (I plan to commute for my shifts from my home 3 hours away and stay on the rez while I'm working). If anyone has any experience making their EM shifts work wi
  8. My family is looking into options of a warmer climate than Maine and have become attracted to the Wilmington, NC area. Does any have any input on how this area is for family, working as a PA in regards to EM job options and salary? I've noticed some advertisements from ApolloMD, an organization we don't have in Maine, anyone have thoughts on this group? Overall take of being a PA in NC? Lastly, anyone have experience in NC as a PA in the National Guard--wondering how slotting looks for interstate transfers. Thanks!
