  1. Hi everyone! This is my first post in this forum. So glad I found it! Anyways, I am currently applying to PA programs, and I have a question regarding my patient care experience. I work as a medical technician at a nursing home. Up until this point, I have about 800 hours. However, some of the schools I am applying to require 1000+ hours. I will easily get these hours done by the end of the summer. Should I put my "end date" on the CASPA as (ex) August 31st, 2019? That way, I can approximate the amount of hours I work a week to put myself over 1000 (and so the schools won't immediately throw out my application)! I have a 4.0 major GPA (Biology) and 3.96 overall GPA, 50+ hours shadowing a PA, 100+ volunteer hours, and scored above the 60th percentile on all sections of my GRE. Do you think this bare minimum of hours will hurt my chances into getting into PA programs? Right now, I am planning on applying to DeSales, Arcadia, Chatham, and Yale (as well as a few others). Thanks!
  2. Planning to apply to Baylor, UT-San Antonio, and UTMB-Galveston by September. While I do not have direct patient care experience yet, I hope to be hired on for a position soon so I can put on the app that experience will be acquired before enrolled in PA school. I have two positions that I'm interviewing for next week: phlebotomist (3 months paid training included) or tissue recovery technician, which involves removing tissue from donors for transplantation. The hours for the technician position are ideal for my situation right now (nanny). Being a phlebotomist means I will have to drop everything I have going on. Will the technician position be considered novel in any way? Or even be considered direct patient care (this will be mostly with cadavers)? Or should I just go with the safe bet and throw away any semblance of a life I have before PA school?
  3. Hi, I have two interviews this week, one with a private urgent care clinic and one with a hospitalist general IM program at a teaching hospital. I am looking for some good interview questions I may not have thought of yet. Here's what I have so far. 1. New position or taking over an old position 2. Shift model 3. Call time and holiday/OT pay 4. Average # of patients per day 5. What does the patient population look like 6. How many providers work per shift 7. Support team 8. PTO, CME, benefits, malpractice coverage 9. Lab services 10. EMR system 11. Orientation time Am I missing anything? Let me know your questions and any advice you may have!

  5. I've just received an offer from an independent clinic that includes a base salary + productivity bonus. When asking about what that bonus may add, HR said one experienced PA has pulled in $40k more. I asked for how this number is calculated and was told, "RVU calculations are taken from the standard CMS format." Despite looking online for examples, I'm not sure what this means practically. I am a new grad, so I understand my focus will be on learning and not productivity for at least the first 6-12 months. But, being reasonable for my first year, should I expect this to bring in an extra $500? $5k? $15k? I have no idea how much this may influence my salary and would love any guidance or perspective you all may have.
  6. Dear All, I earned an MS in Oriental Medicine from an accredited college. The actual clinical training ("internship") portion of the program included about 1000 hours of hands-on direct-patient exposure (under supervision of a health care professional: LAc, MD, or ND on each shift). Since graduating, I've maintained a part time acupuncture practice that includes (mainly): performing acu treatments, massage, nutritional and lifestyle counseling, and herbs. I realize such practice lies outside the typical scope of mainstream medical experience, so I'd like to know if either my training and/or subsequent private practice as an acupuncturist count toward the Health Care Experience (1000-2000 hours) requirement. Or would this be considered, school by school, on a case basis? Thank you!
