  1. I am a student in my didactic year of PA school and I am starting to plan ahead for my clinical year looking for a preceptor in Jackson, MS area or somewhere driving distance from there. If anyone knows of one or a good lead of how to find one, please let me know! Thanks so much! =)
  2. Hi So I'm really accident prone. I got my finger caught in a handheld blender once. Yeah. So I've read on some Doctor forums about all these people in residency that have been stuck accidentally with a needle. Either they did it themselves, another student did it, or even a doctor (cutting one with a scalpel in surgery). So two questions How common is this? And during rotations, will they stick you with higher risk patients that have HIV etc? Thanks for any insight here?
  3. Hello, I'm currently halfway through my first year in PA school in Georgia. I would love to have a clinical rotation back home in South Florida or maybe in Orlando Fl. I was advised to look for a Peds or Women's Health. I'd also be interested in Derm/Primary/ENT. (Derm and ENT being a possible elective rotation. I'm open to any other elective rotations too! Thank You
  4. So I'm in my 30s and I have children. How much can they work with you to find a schedule that works for you? Could I, say, do rotations most days so that it's between 8-4? Is this out of the question with some late nights thrown in? My dream really is to be a PA or an MD. Because of the brutal residency that MDs have to do, I decided with kids that wasn't the avenue I should take. I feel for me it would be too much time away from home. Someone said that PAs don't have to do same kind of 24 + hour long rotations, but I just read they do. What is accurate and do we have to do very long rotations? I'm so torn here. Thanks
  5. My 6 year obligation to the Guard from IPAP is up in 6 months. 8.5 years active, 17 total in. What is active duty like these days? Any slots for field grade PAs out there?
  6. Hi All, I'll be starting my clinical rotations in June and was wondering if anyone has done a rotation in Africa. If you have a connection there or have suggestions on where I can get started, reply here or PM me. Thank you!
  7. Hi All! I am working on completing my application to submit for the class starting January 2016. Is there anyone else in my boat??? :)
  8. Hello all CA license DEA # NPI # Just to make sure i don't forget anything. what else do i need to apply for in order to officially practice medicine in CA? Thank you
  9. So I am almost halfway through didactic year, and soon our preferences and/or contacts for where we would like to do clinical rotations are due. Does anyone know of any willing preceptors in the Cleveland area? We are not allowed to contact hospitals directly, but we can give information to our clinical coordinator. Unfortunately, I do not have many contacts, but I am from the Cleveland area so I would like to return home for clinical year to help save money. Thank you!
  10. Hello everyone, I'm a second year PA student about to start my emergency med rotation. I'm interested in doing research on an EM topic and submitting it for presentation at the SEMPA or AAPA conference, but I'm not sure how to go about doing this. I have limited research experience apart from being a lab tech for a geneticist, so I'm starting from scratch. But I'm motivated if given the guidance. I'd like to learn about what kinds of research students are able to do over the short (5-6 week) time span of a rotation, but can't find a way to filter those out in general academic search engines, etc. Any advice or guidance is much appreciated!
  11. Hi all! I did not see a topic for this school that was current so figured I would start one. Good luck to all!
  12. So I would like to do my elective rotation in Aviation/Aerospace Medicine. My program doesn't have a rotation site for that already for me. Does anyone know of a rotation site in Aviation/Aerospace Medicine or if there is some sort of database where I could search for a rotation spot?
  13. In about a month's time I start clinical year and it's got me a little stressed. So much so, in fact, that I keep waking up in the middle of the night from dreams of patients I didn't know how to diagnose or treat and I can't go back to sleep until I figure it out. I've heard from a lot of people that rotations are one million times better than sitting in a classroom and I'm inclined to believe them but am still more than a bit anxious. I have enjoyed relative academic success in didactic but I know that that doesn't necessarily translate to clinical competence. I had about 4 years of solid, paid clinical experience before school as a MA/EMT/whatever-they-needed at several rural clinics but half of my rotations (ER, Surgery, Peds, IM) are at a very large trauma 1 teaching hospital and I've never been exposed to health care on that kind of scale. I've had plenty of books recommended to me and I've been reading through some of the Case Files series and will probably dip into Surgical Recall as my surg rotation gets closer but I was hoping to get some practical tips (and maybe a little encouragement?) from anyone who precepts, works or who has rotated at a large hospital with Attendings/residents/interns/med students/PA students all over the place. All advice is welcome and much appreciated.
  14. Hi, I'm in the final stages of submitting my CASPA application and the advice I seem to keep getting is to look at how good the school's rotation schedule is. Easier said than done. I look at the rotations, but how are you supposed to know if they're good or not? Any advice on what I should be looking for? Or better yet, is there a list of schools with the best rotations? Thank you in advance for any help..
  15. Hey, fellow citizens of the forum! I know it was discussed before, but I thought may be we could refresh on the topic of books. :) As I start my clinicals soon enough, which books saved your behind on clinicals? If they fit into the coat's pocket, even better! Series are welcome. I am especially interested in surgery and ER, as I start those first. Thanks to everyone in advance!
  16. Hello, I am interviewing for a part time job in Occmed. Its a health clinic inside a Harley Davidson plant. Any advice as how I should prepare for this interview? What are the most common health problems I would encounter in this type of setting? What should I read or study up on? What types of questions I should I ask? Finally, how much per hour should I ask for? I believe the position has no benefits for part time. Any feedback, advice or thoughts would be much appreciated. Thank you!
  17. Does anyone have connections in San Diego with clinicians that would be willing to precept? I'm currently in the process of setting up my clinical rotations for next year and do not have any contacts in California. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
  18. hello, I go to school in MA and I am looking to set up a couple rotation in nyc. Currently, I do not have any direct contacts, so I am open to any suggestions. If anyone knows of a PA or DR willing to take on a PA student, please let me know! Thank you! :)
  19. What is the best major to get a bachelor in to apply for the PA program? I know a lot of people say bio, but I wanted to do something easier and a major I can finish earlier than 4 years if I take summer and winter classes as well! what do you guys recommend? I know a girl who majored in dance and got in PA school. So just wondering what you guys think or majors :)
  20. Hey guys, I'm in my didactic year and my husband's job has moved him to Houston. I'm trying to get as many rotations there as possible so I can eventually get a job there. Anyone know of any offices/PAs that take students? I could take just about any specialty. Any info you have would be great! :;-):
  21. This may be a silly question, but I thought maybe some of you would have some good suggestions. I am trying to think of what would be a nice, little gift to give the PAs who are gracious enough to spend time letting me shadow them. Nothing too extravagant, just a little something more than a card to let them know how much I appreciate them. Any ideas? Thanks in advance...
  22. I'm a 1st year PA student and looking to set up a few rotations in the greater Philadelphia area. I was wondering if there was anyone out there that would know a good way to go about doing this or if they have any locations that were already set up that would be a good place to try. Thanks for the input!
  23. I will be applying to PA School next school, I'm still in undergrad. However, I was a bit curious about housing during rotations. Do the schools usually provide housing arrangements for the students if the rotation sites are out of town? Must the students figure that information out themselves? Thanks in advance for any responses received!
  24. Hello Everyone, all my CASPA information have been sent to my schools, except I am taking my gre in a week. Do you think PA programs won't offer you an interview until they receive your scores? Because now that there is a new gre, the scores are taking a while to reach the schools. Anyone else worried about that? Also, I just finished a summer Statistics Course and got an A. Should I send all the schools an offical copy of my transcripts so they can see that grade, or email them an unofficial copy, or wait until my fall courses are over since I will have to send my grades again anyway?? Thanks in advance for any adivce
  25. Does anyone else wish books could just be a little bit cheaper? Spring semester ran me over $600. Just bought my summer ones - got all the used ones I could (two new editions coming out...) and just shelled out nearly $750! I love the internet and I feel like I got some good deals (14 books - only 3 new) but wow - I thought being a science major for undergrad was expensive! I am trying to remind myself it is only 3 semesters of books (and I hope that Fall semester we will re-use some?) but *ouch*.
