  1. I'm a WF class of 2016 person studying at the Boone campus. The largest differences between the campuses is the fact that the Winston-Salem campus is located in an urban area, while Boone is much more rural. Yes, the class sizes are different (24 currently in Boone vs 64 in Winston Salem) so that might factor into your interest as well. There are no, as far as I can tell, differences academically or programmatically . The faculty and staff work incredibly hard to make sure both campuses have equivalent/equal experiences and opportunities. You should take a look at some of the press releases regarding the opening of the Boone campus. One of the main goals of the program is to help with a shortage of medical providers in western North Carolina. This is a largely rural area of the country and has a shortage of medical providers. If you're interested in rural medicine, working with underserved populations, or specifically would like to practice in western North Carolina, I'd encourage you to consider the Boone campus. From my perspective, I really enjoy being in Boone. Our small numbers make it really easy for us to feel like a family, and I find that faculty are REALLY easy to get a hold of. The Boone community (Appalachian State U. and Appalachian Regional Healthcare System especially) has been incredibly welcoming and helpful to us. It's a great place to live. For anyone in the area, there is an open house on Saturday, 8/23/14 at 10AM at the Boone campus. My guess is that it will last about 1-2 hours, but I'm not sure. It's a great opportunity to get more in-depth information about the program, and to observe a quick mock Inquiry Based Learning session. Good luck to you all!
  2. I made goal of becoming a PA when I was 27, and it's taken me the past 4 years to rack up the coursework (I was a Latin American Studies / Spanish major in undergrad), hours, etc to be competitive in the applicant pool. I was fortunate enough to get into my first choice school during this application season. You can totally do it. I'll be nearly 34 when I graduate, which allows me AT LEAST 31 years to practice before thinking about retirement. That's a good stretch of time! Good luck!
  3. I can't suggest any specific towns, but I'd look for places along I-77 rather than I-85. The construction on 85 north of Charlotte turns that area into a daily traffic nightmare. Your husband's commute would be rough.
  4. No Facebook group yet, to my knowledge. If you'd like to make one, I'd surely join! Congratulations on your acceptance!
  5. Does anyone recall the name of the specific building at ASU that will house the WFSM PA program? I remember Ms. McDaniel showing us an exterior shot of it in her presentation on the 11/20 interview day, but I neglected to write down the name. I'll be going to Boone for a weekend in January and want to scope things out.
  6. Nope. As of yet I haven't gotten any emails or letters. Per the phone call last week, I was hoping to get an email by now but I suppose they are super busy wrapping things up before the holidays. Glad to know I'm not the only one, podrcole.
  7. I've started a new forum so that the Boone people can move our discussion over there.
  8. Hey guys, I thought it'd be a good idea to move some of the discussion over to a separate topic so that the people still waiting to hear won't be bombarded by our messages. I'm sure we're all super stoked to get started. If anyone wants to link up on Facebook, you can find me at www.facebook.com/brendan.klitsch I'll actually be visiting Boone with my wife over the MLK day weekend in January. If anyone else will be up there, drop me a line and hopefully we can meet up for lunch or something. All the best, Brendan
  9. I also got a call on Thursday night (12/12) accepting me to the Boone program. I'm excited to meet you! Should we start a separate forum to discuss Boone related stuff? To all those who have not heard yet, I know the waiting is brutal. Hang in there. Good luck to you all and I hope you hear something soon.
