I often tell patients that I'll help them feel "less bad" - because feeling well will take time and may not happen completely. I also came to learn that it's pointless to care more about a patient's health than they do themselves. After ~11 years of practice I came to learn that I have only some control in any situation: we're always part of a team, with nurses, techs, consultants, and the patient themselves. Most of our "mistakes" have only minor effects anyway. You'll become knowledgeable and skillful enough to avoid the big mistakes. However, as I listen to other providers: physicians, PA's, NP's, I still occasionally hear stories that make me glad I didn't have certain patients.

Hello, I always wanted to work internationally as a PA, when a job came available in Guam I jumped at the chance. Technically, Guam is a US territory, so PA's can legally practice here, just a territorial license (same a state license). Guam is an under-served area, so jobs are plentiful for any that are interested. Because Guam is under-served, most physicians take on multiple roles, regardless of speciality. I work at a primary clinic that also provides urgent care and dermatological services to the islanders. It has been a great experience where I have been able to increase my skill set and relearn many things I haven't thought about since school. It has its challenges, there are some services that aren't available here on the island. We just got our first ever GI specialist last summer (who is looking for a PA right now), and there are no immunologists on the island. One of the urologist offices closed last month leaving one single urologist to cover both hospitals. There is a huge need for medical providers here. If services aren't available, most travel to Japan or the Philippines for specialized care. Another thing I absolutely LOVE about Guam, is that the patients here are so grateful for someone who comes here to practice medicine. Literally every patient thanks you at every visit. The attitude towards healthcare providers is very different from that of a lot of patients back home in the US. There is a huge cultural melting pot as it is a big travel hub for international tourism. Japanese, Filipino, Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, Micronesian, Polynesian, American, Russian, European and others routinely come through my clinic and it is really cool getting to talk to so many people from all over the world, and learn cultural differences and expectations. Some specifics relating to problems on Guam: Diabetes is king. Due to shipping regulations/laws, anything shipped to Guam must touch US mainland soil first before coming to Guam. Hence, fresh fruits and veggies are a struggle to get. Rice fills peoples bellies and canned meats full of nitrates are beloved since WWII. I have never seen such high blood sugar/A1C levels in my life. Gout is more prevalent here as well. TB is common on outer islands, so it is common to screen for and treat TB. I have also seen chicken pox, leprosy, Kawasaki disease and several other conditions I thought I would only read about. Due to the water, psoriasis and eczema is insanely common and developing treatment regimens has been fascinating for me. Again, there is such a need for good providers. One of the things that interests me here is that there is no state/territory PA organization. I've spoken to several PAs here on-island and there is motivation to get something organized, but as of yet nobody has taken the initiative. Anyway, just wanted to get the word out for any interested. Guam is a great opportunity if you are interested.

SedRate started following Working During PA School? and How do you deal with the weight of being a medical provider

I worked for a couple months before rotations. It was on campus so it was easy to fit in around class, low stress, and easy money. I know one other person who worked here and there at a retail store and as a scribe in the ED. Personally, I wouldn't rely on work as a source of income while you're in school. Be prepared to quit picking up shifts if it starts affecting school. School is pretty demanding and you should focus on taking care of yourself during your off times and/or doing some extra studying.

They do two sessions per interview round. It’ll basically be something like 8-12 or 1-5. They will send you your schedule about 3 days before the interview so until you get that just avoid making any commitments that day.
-
It’s hard to elaborate without sharing too much about the interview where you would be at an advantage over other applicants. Just prepare for a traditional PA school interview and be ready to answer questions in a professional manner regardless of what type of question it is. They do a great job allowing time for you to be yourself and feel comfortable with your answers. They allow enough time for applicants to ask questions themselves. It’s a great experience!

2023-2024 cycle NOVA Jax

Hi everyone! Congrats to all of you that have been accepted thus far! I am a current PA-S1. I am just reaching out because I had mentioned to Ms. Kandee that I had worked with my apartment complex to get the new students a deal coming in. I live 10 minutes from campus and don't even need to take the highway! If anyone is interested, I don't know how this works, but send me a message. Also, if you haven't gotten interview yet, don't lose hope, I didn't get my invite to interview until April 3rd of last year and was accepted on the 13th. Good luck everyone. -
I have never met someone who tried working while in PA school who had a good experience. You will need your time off to be off. This is one of those things you can do at your own risk. There’s a reason why all programs discourage employment and some even prohibit it.

I agree with both users above. I would take the essay for review at your university’s writing center to have it reviewed for grammar and graduate-level quality writing (this is usually free). But I would also want PAs with experience helping people get accepted to lay eyes on it to review the experiences and PA-specific/medical terminology. If you want to pay for a review, I would recommend paying for a service who are familiarized with the PA school admission process.

I am debating on what to do with work once I start PA school. I am currently a therapy aide and I work 10.5 hours every Saturday and Sunday. The job is extremely flexible in that it allows me plenty of downtime to do homework in between patient sessions. It has worked out great for me in undergrad, which I graduated from with a 3.9 and honors. I know PA school is a different story, though, so I'd appreciate any suggestions/advice on the idea. I absolutely love my job and think it would be wonderful if I could keep it!
