PROGRAM OVERVIEW

 

The 1st Annual Comprehensive Review of Psychiatry is an engaging, intensive two-day CME course focusing on behavioral health and psychiatric disorders. It will include an in-depth review of treatment and management considerations for PAs whose practice requires an understanding of frequently seen mental health/behavior management conditions. Specifically, this CME event will appeal to family medicine PAs who are in need of a broader understanding of the practice of psychiatry. Experienced PAs in psychiatry will be updated with the latest practice paradigms and learn new treatment approaches and strategies for the treatment and management of patients with mental illness.

 

GENERAL SESSION

 

Educational Objectives – Upon completion of this educational program, participants should be better able to:

• Identify the etiology, pathophysiology, and neural pathways of various psychiatric disorders and their effects on patients
  
• Demonstrate an increase in their ability to assess behavior disorders and diagnose psychiatric disorders and comorbidities, with the goal of accurate diagnosis and appropriate evidence based treatment
  
• Utilize evidence-based models and the application of pharmacotherapeutic interventions to develop treatment plans, predict treatment response and potential for remission of symptoms and relapse prevention
  
• Identify barriers to treatment and strategies to improve outcomes for patients with acute and chronic psychiatric disorders
  

OVERVIEW OF WORKSHOPS

 

Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Psychopharmacology - Two workshops will be offered and will run concurrently Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. Participants may take advantage of both workshops by attending alternatively Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. Participants we be able to attend both or one of the workshops of their choice. Most participants will want to attend both workshops.

 

OBJECTIVES – Upon completion of this educational program, participants should be better able to:

• Demonstrate basic understanding of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT
  
• Identify which patients may benefit from cognitive behavior therapy
  
• Understand basic techniques of CBT in the clinical setting
  
• Have a working understanding of routine and newer psychotropic medications to treat mental conditions and disorders
  

This workshop is designed to introduce participants to the theory and practice of CBT which is is an empirically tested form of psychotherapy. CBT can be demonstrate an effective in primary care settings and was developed for professionals who have not had formal psychotherapy training. The course will consist of didactic presentations with clinical examples. Topics will include CBT theory, evaluation, and techniques. Participants should leave with the knowledge needed to begin using CBT in their clinical practice. Information about further training will be provided for those interested.The psychopharmacology workshop will focus on standard psychotropic medications as well as the newest medications used in psychiatry to treat common psychiatric illness.

 

OBJECTIVES

• Have a working understanding of common medications used in treating psychiatric patients and be introduced to a newer generation of psychotropic medications with emphasis on dosage and administration.
  
• Will come away from this workshop with new drug information that may be applied to your practice routine immediately
  

FACULTY

 

Marguerite R. Poreda, MD – Course Director Dr. Poreda is a distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and a staff psychiatrist at the VA Medical Center Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic, Fort Myers, FL.

 

Jennifer Nelson, PharmD Dr. Nelson is a psychopharmacologist at Parkland Health & Hospital System, Dallas, TX and Director, Pharmacy Residency Training Program. She is a lecturer in pharmacology for the UT Southwestern Physician Assistant Program and provides lectures to psychiatry residents and medical students at UT Southwestern.

 

Steven Krebaum, PhD Dr. Krebaum is a psychologist. He is an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas Tx. He is an expert in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) both as a clinician and educator. He was trained in CBT at the Beck Institute of Cognitive Therapy and Research, and has had many years experience in teaching graduate courses in CBT and providing competency ratings for other CBT providers.

 

CME CREDIT

 

This program has been reviewed and is approved for a maximum of 20.00 hours of AAPA Category 1 CME credit by the Physician Assistant Review Panel. Physician assistants should claim only those hours actually spent participating in the CME activity. This program was planned in accordance with AAPA’s CME Standards for Live Programs and for Commercial Support of Live Programs.
