Getting into medical school back in the late 70's would've been too competitive for my kind, and I didn't weigh enough for Dallas Fire/Rescue to join them (though I did go through my first EMT program with them). While going to a local junior college I had a sociology professor who told me about the PA profession. Silly me thought I could play doctor and not have to worry about liability, call, etc. like the doc's had. Sold myself (I think) with two statements during interviews. 1. "I may not be the medical superstar but just like a good utility baseball player, I will be solid and dependable (making mention of my steady GPA from HS through 4 years of college at about 3.3-3.4). 2. With what I've already seen by handling Dallas Co. Medical Examiner case pickups at all hours there is nothing that I'll run across here that will freeze me up and that I won't be able to respond to whether it be medical emergencies or gross deformities." I guess it was enough and they let me in on my first shot.
