CNM? or PA who specializes in Obstetrics?

Recommended Posts

I just started college Fall of 2012 with the plans of becoming an OB/GYN.. but now I'm thinking I don't know if I wanna do that and I am considering a CNM or PA and specializing. But what I'm trying to figure out is which of those will be the best job to give me the feel of a OB/GYN if I were to not go all the way in becoming a licensed Obstetrician.

Ideas?

Most folks change the what they want to be in medicine several times as their maturity in the education process evolves.

With respect, I would suggest finishing your college, doing as well as possible, so that you have options at te end of your undergrad time.

When you do have options, reconsider your choices

-- MD? If so, OBGYN? This is a great specialty.. Encompasses virtually all aspects of medicine ( general, family, endocrine, internal medicine, oncology, obstetrics) AND some kick *** surgery...

CNM? Super field, but limited to only perinatal care and immediate delivery of an uncomplicated, low risk surgery. Much more holistic approach than allopathic.. More "nurse" than "doctor"

PA? open to all specialties.. Exposure to both simple and complex GYN cases, and less exposure to OB.. probably no OR time in OB, and more OR in GYN. Versatility ... Can move on if are not happy with niche..

For now, get your tickets stamped ( basic PRE-requisites, o-chem, I-chem, math sequences , physics, etc) and chose your pearl when your education opens the oyster.

Agree with Davis except regarding the OB surgery. I first assist on C-sections and so have other PAs in this practice. We don't do much else as far as OB/GYN surgeries as we're in FP and I work the UC. But it's a good balance.

Hi Andrew,

I know this post is from a while ago but I was hoping to hear more about your experience as an OB PA! I know its rare to find a job as a PA in OBGYN where you are first assisting in C sections but that is what I am most interested in doing after school! I was wondering where you are currently working now and if you are still doing this!
