NC salaries

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know what a fair starting salary in Charlotte, NC is?? I am a new grad with no experience. I am looking for an estimate. I looked at the APAA website, and the census does not really help because the respondants are mostly people with 10+ yrs experience. I want to negotiate a contract I may be receiving soon.

Thanks :)

There is an AAPA new grad salary survey for PAs graduating in 2006. Alot of competition for jobs in Charlotte as folks like this city so as a new grad don't expect top end of salary range....or you can aim high and see if this works!;) Congratulations on your new job prospect!

Thanks! I am going into FM, and I have asked for a fair salary, but was unsure if it was too low. I kinda used the AAPA salary and state specific as well as dept of labor to figure out what to ask for. When I get my contract soon, I will make sure it is what I asked for (and will try to push for more)

Ahhh, Charlotte. I miss green things, like trees and grass :p

LA: Didn't realize you were a Tarheel gal! Well, all those lush green things are reeking havoc with allergies and sinuses this time of the year~KACHOO! Charlotte is a fun place to play~in fact, going there this weekend for an Eric Clapton concert!:D

Not exactly Tarheel... I was an immigrant. I moved there from SC. First time in my adult life I move from my home state and I only made it to exit 6 :p

You would think that a green area would have a monopoly on allergies, but I'm seeing a lot right now. I've almost forgotten what normal nasal mucosa looks like!

Have fun at the concert! Is it at Verizon? This is a great time of year for outside events.

The salary range for PA's at Carolinas Medical Center (and, I believe, the Carolinas Health Care System) is $60K - $90K. However, cardiothoracic surgery PA's there can earn up to $105K. For those who are unaware, Carolinas Medical Center is the largest hospital in Charlotte. This information is available on their internal job posting site.

You can also get an individualized salary survey from the AAPA that would cover your specialty (FP), years of experience (0-1), and geographic region.

Another NC resident here and can tell you that we have a very healthy economy for PA's throughout the state. Specialities do bring in more but for starting salaries 70-75K is the norm. The areas with PA programs (Triangle & Triad areas) tend to have lower salaries due to folks wanting to live in the cities and the supply of PA's greater. It's the south for sure but we do have a progressive and dynamic working environment for PA's here.

This is kind of general for any job, but something I'm not sure about.

The median salary was quite a bit less in 2006 than it is now in 2008 for PA's. Well for the PA's that began work in 2006, will they get bonuses or raises that will compensate them for the changes in salary since then?

I can tell you this... I live in southeastern NC with a county population near 300k(near FT Bragg) I just got my W2 from my primary employer (not all my per diem gigs) and it was well over 120K. this is for EM....

Hrmmmmm none of you live in Charlotte I see.......I'm a new grad....and CHS just offered me low 60s for a specialty practice.....they said that all new grads get the same pay, UNLESS you are EM or CVT.

I'm frustrated.....do I take the low pay b/c that's what they are paying....or do I drive 35 min for 70+?

Remember..lows 60's plus benfits equals total package in the 70s. It all comes down to if this job is something that you think you would enjoy (good working environment, good experience) and it affords you the type of lifestyle you want (no commuting in Charlotte traffic daily). Unfortunately one of the perks of living in a very friendly PA state that has lots of new graduates in the marketplace is that people want to live in the urban areas and they have little problem filling positions...and sounds like you do have a choice of jobs so make a fit that is right for you. Good luck!

Salaries in NC start lower for new grads. Now that I have the 1+ year of experience, I left my first job and now am making 15-16K more than when I started. I am also about to interview for a speciality which will give me another 5-6K. So, it looks like new grads not such great pay, but after a year there is a fighting chance!!

Totally agreed - first year grad salaries are tough anywhere but once you get that first year or two under your belt its a whole new game. I did EM in Charlotte (after 2 years of Em where I trained elsewhere - interestingly, I couldn't find anywhere in Charlotte that would hire a new grad when I was fresh out. Of course that changed about 6 months after I graduated!

relocating from NJ to NC. Refused to relocate for less than I am making in NJ. Whats the point in obtaing a cheaper cost of living, if you will only make less -- lifestyle will be equal. Big private groups will negotiate if your experience matches there needs. Im proud to now call myself a southerner, hahha.
