Certificate program vs. Masters program

Recommended Posts

Dear current and/or past UCD PA students,

I'm applying to UC Davis this cycle and the Certificate vs. Masters Degree issue has me confused. How important is it? I understand the verdict is still out as to whether or not the Program will get the blessing of the University to become a Masters Degree granting program. I would love to get feedback on what you think about getting a certificate.

Are you concerned about a change to PA licensing that would require all PAs to have a Masters Degree? Are you under the assumption that those with a certificate would be grandfathered in? I have to believe there are thousands of practicing PAs that don't have a Masters...speaking of which, I wonder what the % is for cert vs. masters?

When you went through the interview process, did you ask the adcomm about this issue? What was their response?

For those who have graduated and passed your boards, have you met any resistance in the hiring process because you don't have a Masters Degree?

Any feedback would be appreciated! Thank you.

UC Davis just got approved for the Master's degree for the FNP/PA program for the entering class of 2013 so no more worries about the certificate. There are bridge programs to obtain a masters degree if you have a certificate, but you don't need to worry about that at UC Davis. The program director told me last week that the program has officially been approved for the Masters.

No more distance learning. They started that this year. The curriculum is now 3 months longer and clinical rotations start later. It will be a masters of physician assistant studies and they are debating if it will stay under the medical school or if they are going to move it under the school of nursing, but everything in the UC system is slow so if they move to the school of nursing it probably won't happen right away and so far it's just a rumor.
