THE DIRECTOR IS A PERSONAL FRIEND. SHOULD BE A GREAT PROGRAM. I KNOW THE PROGRAM WILL HAVE A REQUIRED INNER CITY AND OVERSEAS ROTATION:

PROGRAM SET TO ACCEPT STUDENTS IN JANUARY 2014

Boiling Springs, N.C.—University officials have announced that Gardner-Webb will launch a physician assistant program beginning January 2014. The program will help fill the healthcare industry’s need for primary care providers by training medical professionals for the primary care field. Dr. Gregory Davenport, a physician assistant with a doctorate in health science, is the newly hired dean and program director.

The program will last 27 months and will be broken into two parts. During the first 15 months, students will take classes five days a week, for approximately eight hours a day. The second half of the program will feature hands-on learning experiences in local hospitals and doctors’ offices.

Davenport is an internationally known author, speaker and wilderness survival expert. He. has served in the United States Air Forceas a survival, evasion, resistance and escape specialist (SERE), been an emergency medicine physician assistant in extremely remote locations, and has even hosted his own show on the History Channel. Although Davenport has lived a highly adventurous and successful life in the limelight, he calls this opportunity a “higher calling.”

“Right now I’m focused on creating a faith-based physician assistant program here at Gardner-Webb,” he said.

Davenport said the physician assistant program at Gardner-Webb will return to the fundamentals of the PA profession—diagnosing and treating common medical conditions under physician supervision. “Our goal is to get PAs back into that primary care arena, and help close that gap between access to care and patient demand. To make this happen, Gardner-Webb’s PA program aims to expand the healing gifts that Gardner-Webb students already possess.”

For more information about the program, contact Gregory Davenport at 704-406-2326 or gdavenport@gardner-webb.edu.

Located in Boiling Springs, N.C., Gardner-Webb University blends a liberal arts core curriculum with more than 55 major and minor professional programs of study, a comprehensive academic experience that flows from our Christian commitment to intellectual freedom, service and leadership.

wow- NC is really adding a lot of new programs! I hope they are all top-notch. From what I have heard about Campbell-it is, and I expect Elon to be great. This one sounds promising too! I love that all the programs are adding international rotations. I hope there are plenty of jobs for new grads in the next 5 years around here though :=D:.

Greg has access to multiple overseas sites through a connection with the school's baptist overseas medical missions. I think this will be a high end program in 5-10 yrs, essentially "medex-east". Greg knows what it takes to design a great curriculum, choose students who will succeed , and work with them through their transition from paramedics and nurses to qualified pa graduates.

What is it going to take for more state-funded institutions to start opening PA programs? I was fortunate to get into the PA program in the town I have lived in and preferred to stay in, but it's still a private institution. My state has at least 5 PA programs, but all are private, therefore no in-state tuition...

Sounds promising. I almost returned to my alma mater (Campbell) when they opened their program, but Idaho State was closer to family and the GI Bill covers all the tuition since its a public school. Great area NC is though, especially around Wilmington or the Triangle.

I would not pass this one up.

Francis Marion in Florence has been in the pre-planning stages for a few years. There is definitely a need. I have kept them on my radar for a possible teaching post or medical director once I finish residency, if I stay there. I miss my house and my husband ;)

With 2 top-notch hospitals in Florence, SC (McLeod Regional and Carolinas) and a strong feeder program from Francis Marion undergrad I think they would be well-positioned to train quality PAs.

;)

The program sounds promising! I agree that NC has been introducing new PA programs and already has several, which is great! But, let's go South Carolina! Still only one program in the entire state!

Lenoir Rhyne University in Hickory NC will be starting a PA program in 2 - 2 1/2 years...I talked to them and they are just waiting on the go ahead to start hiring staff. Also, ASU in Boone, NC is starting a PA program in conjunction with Wake Forest University...not sure how it will work but I assume tuition will be the same as at Wake Forest and not ASU which is a state school. I have not heard a lot about ASU though but a student that goes to ASU was told about it because that is what she wants to pursue after she graduates from ASU. I guess someone would need to call Wake Forest to find out the details.

i grew up and did undergrad in NC, and now live in SC. There is most definitely more demand for PA's here. There is in NC as well, but there is a noticeable difference. MUSC is the only in state source, I would like to see another one. Even if roper started a program in conjunction with a school that would help. Francis Marion would help.

BTW elon's new program looks great, it and MUSC are my top picks for school. Just sent everything off for my first cycle with CASPA! I am so happy to see all the support for PA's in my home state, as well as the new programs... though it makes sense with good ol' durham being the hometown for PA's (and me!).

WTF is a "faith based PA program."  Do they make you swear allegiance to Jesus in order to start school there?

This sounds a lot like that joke of a program Liberty University that is opening a medical school.  Supposedly as a condition of starting school at Liberty you have to sign a "moral clause" statement that says you wont drink, smoke, or do other unsavory stuff.

Your blasphemy is not welcomed on this board. You need to turn to Jesus and repent your evil ways. "Faith based program" makes no particular reference. Keep you hatred of Christians to your self.

Making light of a faith based program is prejudicial and unprofessional, but so is calling it blasphemy and telling someone they need to repent to Jesus. I am a Christian and I believe everyone has a right to their religious beliefs, but feel that my beliefs should not be shoved down anyone's throat. Both posts seem uncalled for.

Making light of a faith based program is NOT prejudicial and unprofessional, mocking religion is. "but feel that my beliefs should not be shoved down anyone's throat", is this not YOU shoving YOUR beliefs down the forum members throats? This forum should be left for discussion of all pertaining to the PA profession. Do not shift the focus. Lets keep the discussion where it belongs. I hope this program excells and produces providers that we can all be proud of.

This is the internet.  You should consider avoiding it if occasionally reading something you find distasteful will greatly upset you.
