New Grad Compensation

Recommended Posts

I was recently offered a position with a large surgical practice in a major city, but I feel as though the salary is rather low, especially since I am expected to work 60+ hours/week and 6 on-call shifts/month. May I have some insight as to what a surgical PA should expect to be compensated?

Also, the group operates out of 3 hospitals. Is it fair to ask to be compensated for travel expenses?

Sixty hours a week and call is standard for surgery. That's just how it is. I started at 80,000 about three years ago. I'm in a tough job market, though. New grad in a good market, I'd think 95,000 to 100,000 is a nice starting salary. They should pay you mileage if the locations are spread out (20-30 miles apart). And you can generally only ask for mileage traveling from place of work to place of work, not home to work or vice versa.

I agree, it bites. But it can be hard to get that first job and get good training. You put in your time, then you leave and get these great deals everyone else seems to get. In three years, you should be up thirty percent.

Maybe my perception is warped, as I said, I'm in South Florida. Terrible market. I got an offer for 85,000 with two years experience in neurosurgery. I countered, and they withdrew the offer, offended I dare ask for more.

You can ask for cell phone reimbursement. I didn't because I work for small shop, and I didn't want to be beholden when I'm not on call.
