PA job, relocating from NYC to SoCal

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Working PA in NYC with experience in internal medicine, orthopedics, some ER.  Relocating to southern california end of yer/early next year.  Im a bit surprised by the scarcity of ideal PA jobs in SoCal at least from my initial online searches.  I was looking into gigs in internal medicine, interventional cardiology, UCC, etc.  Ideally I would like to work in hospital with 3/12 schedule like I have now but those jobs do not seem to be in abundance like NYC. Just was in pasadena and really liked the area so would want something without a run back to NYC kind of commute.  Anyways, any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.  Always wanted to try living and working elsewhere for a spell..........figure the time is right....or not lol

I moved last year from NYC to CA and had a similar experience when looking for a job. My experience has been (at least in the Orange County area) that there are not nearly as many opportunities for PA's here. You will likely have a higher salary here which is nice, but PA's are underutilized in the hospitals here when compared to the east. From my observations, hospital systems in OC don't hire many PA's (you certainly don't have entire floors ran by PA's like I was doing in NYC). It seems that PA's are hired by private physician groups rather than hospitals for surgical jobs, internal medicine, etc. And when I've seen hospital positions available they are generally targeted towards NPs rather than PAs. While I did end up finding an ER position I am happy with, I miss the east coasts more progressive attitude towards PAs.

From the brief research I've done, it appears that there are more of those opportunities in Northern California, and some of the large hospitals in LA so maybe they're possible to find.

Hey, I'm curious which ER do you work in? I also moved to Cali from NY and have to agree that PAs are definitely underutilized here compared to the East. I'm looking to change jobs, but it's so difficult to find jobs here too.
