Online ACLS, PALS?

Recommended Posts

I would not do a purely online course for your initial certification anyway - there is a lot that you learn from interaction with your instructor and other students.  ACLS is as much about personnel management as it is about information intake, processing, and decision making.  Otherwise you'll get to a code and just assume that the information will come to you.  You have to direct the interventions and assessments being done.  If you don't, you'll miss something.

My $0.02.

My ER just hired a PA and she did her recertification for ACLS on her own dime so she'd be up to date... turns out she did it online and even though it wasn't her first course, the hospital wouldn't accept and she had to redo!

I think you made the right decision. Online-only courses may be easiest in the moment, but might not be best long term. I've seen facilities change their policy and require AHA courses causing individuals to have to retake the class and they lost their money for an online program they can't use anymore. The other scenario is when you get a new job and that employer won't accept your online course. The safest bet is to just get your AHA ACLS class from a local company or hospital.

This article is pretty thorough explaining what to look for in a company and which ones to stay away from for PALS classes or ACLS.

Corporate Urgent Cares just want the card.  If fact, they link you to the online course to get that card.  lol it's cheesy, but why you would need to be up on acls in a facility with no crash cart is beyond me.  The BLS for healthcare providers goes over the AED and covers everything we need to do in UC before EMS gets there 5 min after you call them.
